This article examines the content of Soviet-Korean Songs. In particular, the analysis reveals the musical characteristics and special features of Soviet-Korean songs. The formal study of Soviet-Korean songs brings to light a historical record of the lives of these people. It contains the expression of their life experience in foreign countries, such as the former Soviet Union, and present-day Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Through my research on Soviet-Korean music, I identify the incorporation of Japanese and western music such as the changga or yuhaengga styles of music with traditional Korean music to develop a completely new musical form. Soviet-Korean songs includes diverse song forms, such as folksongs(minyo), new folksongs(sin-minyo), changga, newly composed songs in the folk style, revolutionary songs, enlightenment songs, and songs which can not be classified by functional categories. At this point, we can classify into three groups the songs of Soviet-Koreans who had migrated to Russia more than 140 years ago. The first group includes Korean traditional pansori, chapga, minyo, sin-minyo. Enlightenment period songs at the Far East, songs of separation, and popular changga make up the second group. The third group contains new songs by Korean composers who sought to encourage Soviet-Koreans participating in the social processes of rapid industrialization, agricultural collectivization and mechanization, World War II, and postwar economic reconstruction. An analysis of Soviet-Korean songs help understand the music of Korean diaspora. A characteristic of Soviet-Korean music can be found out in its hybridity. Soviet-Korean songs were influenced by Russian, Chinese and Japanese songs. Nevertheless, Soviet-Koreans expressed their Korean identity in their songs. We can conclude that the process of the acculturation of foreign music occurred much faster than that of the assimilation of foreign music in Soviet-Korean songs. The analysis of Soviet-Korean folksongs also contributes to understanding the music of the larger Korean diaspora. Soviet-Korean music adds a lot of interesting material to the scholarship of Koreans abroad. I plan to continue my research and to write more on Soviet-Korean songs as they developed after the deportation of Koreans from the Far East.
