The purpose of this study is to examine possible musicological applications of Korean phonograph records through building their DB archives. To examine the applications, this study reviewed actual profile on archive system for conventional Korean phonograph records, and considered musicological performances from those records to seek their possible musicological applications by building corresponding DB. The phonograph record, as the first historical sound record invented by human being, was commercially released for the first time in Korea in 1907. The phonograph records introduced early in Korea in famous labels such as Okeh, Columbia, Victor, Regal and Polydor contained a huge amount of original archives on every art and performance in those days, such as Korean traditional music, which was created and handed down by our ancestors, contemporary Western music, theater, initial sounds of entertainment, and even voice of contemporary celebrities. It is not too much to say that Korean phonograph records are now hardly protected under specialized governmental archival system. On the contrary, from the beginning of the 21st century, our academic efforts to find out interesting aspects of modern and post-modern Korean culture have focused on Korean phonograph records beyond the dimension of simple literature-based studies. Unfortunately, however, those efforts have failed to reap significant academic performances as expected. In 1998, our Korean traditional music world released a whole library of Korean phonograph records, which contributed somewhat to academic advancement, but there are not yet enough archives to meet target academic goals. Besides, we also have another academic assignment such as existing superficial studies in our popular music, and studies in Western music world around the early 20th century, which has not been discovered fully even up to date. In order to facilitate these baseline studies and promote developing popular media contents, it is urgently and urgingly required to build up ‘a digital archive of Korean phonograph records', and thereby construct such an archive in near future.

본고는 한국유성기음반 DB의 음악학적 활용 방안을 검토하는 것이 목적이다. 방안 검토를 위하여 기존 한국유성기음반의 보존 현황을 검토 하고, 한국유성기음반을 통한 음악적 연구 성과를 고찰하여, DB구축을 통한 음악학적 활용 방안을 모색하였다. 인류가 발명한 최초의 음향 기록 자료인 유성기음반이 한국에서 상업적으로 출반된 것은 1907년부터이다. 오케(Okeh), 콜롬비아(Columbia), 빅터(Victor), 리갈(Regal), 폴리돌(Polydor) 등의 레이블로 한국에 선보인 유성기음반에는 우리 선조들이 창조 계승한 전통음악의 전반, 초창기의 양악, 연극, 연예의 최초 음향, 명사들의 육성까지 그 시대가 낳은 모든 예술과 공연에 관한 방대한 자료들이 담겨 있다. 한국유성기음반은 정부차원의 전문화된 보존체계를 갖추지 못하고 있다 해도 과언은 아닐 것이다. 반면 21세기의 시작과 함께 근현대 문화 양상을 파악하기 위한 연구자들의 연구는 문헌자료의 연구를 넘어 한국유성기음반에 주목하고 있다. 그러나 그 성과는 미약하다. 1998년부터 국악계에는 한국유성기음반 총목록이 발간되어 어느 정도 연구의 진전을 보았으나, 자료의 부재라는 문제에 봉착하고 있다. 더욱이 단편적인 대중음악계의 연구와 미개척지인 서양음악계의 연구는 남겨진 과제이기도 하다. 이러한 기초기반연구의 활성화를 위해 ‘한국유성기음반 디지털 아카이브’ 구축이 요구되며, 나아가 국가차원의 ‘한국유성기음반 아카이브’ 건설이 추진되어야 한다.
