This research examined what influences the Department of Korean Traditional Music of Cheongju University had on the local traditional music culture in Chungcheongbuk-do, for the past 24 years from the founding of the Department in 1987 through its closing in 2010. For this research, the local newspaper articles from Chungcheong Daily for one year before the Department began recruiting new students and after its closing, respectively, were reviewed, and the growth and development of Korean traditional music culture for those 24 years were compared. During this period, the number of newspaper articles had grown 1,556%, and the qualities of those articles had also been largely improved. Such facts strongly evidence the phenomenal cultural growth of Korean traditional music in Chungcheongbuk-do. The Department of Korean Traditional Music of Cheongju University helped improve the image of Korean traditional music in Chungcheongbuk-do, had a positive influence on the education of Korean traditional music at middle schools, and discovered many talented young students who later majored in Korean traditional music and became the center of a dynamic cycle of its development as teachers and music players after their graduation from Cheongju University. The activities of the graduates from Cheongju University can be grouped into three categories: First, by working at three Korean traditional music orchestras operated by local and provincial governments, those graduates have contributed to the development of local music culture; Second, as after-school teachers and local art instructors, the graduates have taken a major role in local education; and Third, as group and individual music players, they had become the foundation of debeloping local Korean traditional music culture. The Department of Korean Traditional Music of Cheongju University had held both the local competitions for the students from Chungcheongbuk-do Province and the national competition to recruit the promising young talents in the field of Korean traditional music, and also presented the education programs for local citizens every summer and winter. Such continuing efforts had contributed to the promotion of overall image and status of Korean traditional music in this local community.

본 논문은 1987년 청주대학교 예술대학에 국악과가 창설되고, 이후 2010년 폐과된 상황에서 그간의 24년간 청주대학교 국악과가 지역사회의 국악문화에 어떠한 영향을 주었는가를 연구한 것이다. 이를 위하여 학과가 신입생을 모집하기 일 년 전인 1986년 일 년간의 국악에 대한 지역의 신문기사를 조사하였고, 폐과된 2010년의 일 년간의 국악에 대한 신문기사를 마찬가지로 동일한 신문인 충청일보를 통해 조사하여, 국악과가 존속해 온 24년 후의 지역의 국악문화가 어느 정도 성장 변화하였는지 비교하였다. 기사의 양적인 비교는 1556% 성장하였고, 질적으로도 높은 수준의 모습을 보여 청주대학교에 국악과가 창설된 이후 충청북도 지역의 국악문화가 비약적인 성장을 해 왔다는 사실을 알 수 있었다. 청주대학교 국악과는 지역에서 국악에 대한 이미지를 제고시키며 중등학교 국악 교육에 많은 긍정적 영향을 주었고 그들 중에서 인재를 발굴하여 전공자로 배출시켰으며, 이들이 졸업한 후에는 예술 현장과 교육 현장에 뛰어들어 순환적으로 지역의 국악문화를 성장시키는 선순환적 고리의 중심에 위치하고 있었다. 졸업생들의 활동은 크게 3가지로 구분된다. 첫째, 지역에 분포하는 3대 관립 국악관현악단에서 비중 있게 활동함으로써 지역의 국악문화 성장에 기여하여 왔다. 둘째, 지역의 예술 강사와 방과후학교 교사로 활동함으로써 지역 국악교육의 많은 부분을 담당하여 왔다. 셋째, 국악그룹 활동 및 개인 활동으로 지역의 국악문화 성장에 밑거름이 되어왔다. 청주대학교 국악과는 또 대학 주최로 전국 초․중․고 학생국악경연대회와 충청북도 중․고등학교 학생국악경연대회를 개최하여 국악인재를 발굴하는 동시에, 일반인을 대상으로 여름․겨울 방학기간을 이용한 국악 강습을 실시하여 지역민이 바라보는 국악에 대한 품격과 위상을 높여왔다.
