The World of Korean Traditional Music and Its Social History right after the Korean Liberation (August 1945~July 1948)
Music represents the society and the history which produce the music. This is true of Korean traditional music. With this in mind, this article examines the world of Korean traditional music and its social history right after the Korean liberation from Japanese colonial rule in August 1945. At that time, the Korean people tried to build their own nation-state. Traditional musicians expressed their desire to build the national music. They produced musical works such as ‘Liberation Song’, ‘National-Foundation Song’ and etc. Also, in terms of their musical genre, they formed organizations such as Gukakwon(國樂院) or National Music Center in English composed of folk musicians, and Aakbu(雅樂部) or the Court Music Institute in English composed of court musicians. These activities were geared to construct traditional musicians as the principal agent of national music and to build traditional music as Gukak(國樂) meaning national music in English. Traditional musicians also did various activities to establish their political and social status and to resolve their economic hardship. Traditional musicians lost their economic base during the economic crisis right after the liberation. At the same time, traditional music, regarded as old or behind the times, lost its prestige to the extent that traditional musicians and their music were ousted from public spheres to the private ones. In this situation, traditional musicians did the activities such as broadcasting, performance, research, lecture, and others in order to uplift the social status of traditional music and musicians and overcome their economic and social problems. In line with these activities, they, calling their music as Gukak, tried to construct the identity of traditional music as national music.
