The Reformation of Geneva in the time of John Calvin has been evaluated as the most strict and thoroughly implemented historical experience at the time of the Reformation. In particular, the consistory, established in 1542 by Calvin's firm determination, was infamous as the best institutional development to support Calvin in his theological endeavors. Therefore, the registers of the consistory are considered to be important for understanding the true nature of the Reformation of Geneva. When we look at the daily life of the Geneva written in the registers of the consistory, however, we realize that there was a gap between the ideals that Calvin dreamed of and the reality that ordinary people survived in. This article analyzes six divorce cases at the year of 1550 written in the registers of the consistory statistically and microscopically. Those divorce cases could be good clues to prove that disciplining of the mass in sixteenth century Geneva was never unilateral, and at the same time, the commom people of Geneva also had plenty of possibility to reinterpret the ideas of the Reformation by their own will.

1541년 칼뱅의 정착을 계기로 본격화된 쥬네브 종교개혁은 종교개혁 신념의 실천과 확장에 있어 가장 엄격하고 철저하게 구현되었다는 평가를 받아왔다. 특히 칼뱅의 정교한 신학적 이상을 현실화하기 위해 설치된 컨시스토리는 쥬네브 민중의 일상을 꼼꼼하게 감찰, 통제하는 기관으로 유명하다. 따라서 컨시스토리의 결정사항을 기록한 회의록은 쥬네브 종교개혁의 본질을 파악하기 위한 중요한 사료로 간주된다. 그러나 실제로 컨시스토리 회의록에 드러난 쥬네브 민중들의 일상을 검토해보면, 칼뱅이 꿈꾸던 이상과 실제 현실 사이의 간극이 결코 적지 않다는 점을 실감하게 된다. 본고는 종교개혁가들에 의해 새롭게 복원된 이혼이라는 제도를 매개로 1550년의 컨시스토리 회의록을 통계적, 미시적으로 분석하여, 쥬네브 종교개혁 시기 진행된 민중규율화 과정이 결코 일방적이지 않았으며, 민중들 역시 종교개혁적 사고방식을 나름의 방식으로 재해석하여 새롭게 수용할 여지가 있었음을 입증하고자 했다.
