Lettres de rémission were neglected by historians for a long time, on account of their weaknesses such as commonplace formality, repetitiveness, and fragmentary features. In particular, doubts on their credibility decisively caused historians to underestimate their value as a historical source. But, despite those somewhat superficial weaknesses, it is difficult to deny that they are the serial source which recorded repetitive events in a fixed form over a long period, and thus allow researchers to adopt a wide variety of statistical approaches. So to speak, they are a medieval version of big data. And they are records of all sorts of people who happened to be brought to justice, and thus unlike any other official letters, hold everyday lives and mentalities of commoners as if caught in snapshots. In addition, these special records of punishment and pardon for crimes reveal intriguing interactions between the authorities and the people. Consequently, the records could have much attraction for not only judicial history but also sociology, anthropology, and folklorism. This article examines new visions and products that these massive records of power brought to social history and history of mentality, especially to the study of the relation between state and society in the Middle Age. Furthermore, it demonstrates how new questions and perspectives of historians could attach ever new values to the records.

사면장은 그 상투적인 형식성과 반복성, 단편성 같은 약점들 때문에 역사가들로부터 오랜 동안 외면을 받아왔다. 정보의 진실성에 대한 의심 또한 그 사료로서의 가치가 폄하된 결정적인 이유였다. 그러나 이 같은 피상적인 단점들에도 불구하고, 사면장은 장기간에 걸쳐 반복적 사건들을 동일한 양식으로 기록한 계열적 사료이며, 바로 이러한 성격 때문에 매우 다양한 통계적 접근을 허용한다. 말하자면 그것은 중세의 빅데이터인 것이다. 또한 법망에 걸려든 사회의 모든 계층들을 포괄한다는 면에서 여느 공문서에서는 접할 수 없는 보통 사람들의 일상과 심성을 마치 스냅사진처럼 담고 있다. 게다가 그것은 죄와 처벌 그리고 용서를 통해서 권력과 인민의 상호관계 및 상호작용을 시사해준다. 이러한 이유로 사면장은 사법사 분야만이 아니라 사회학, 인류학, 민속학 등 다양한 학문분야에서 조명을 받고 있다. 이 논문은 클로드 고바르(Claude Gauvard)의 사면장의 분석 범주와 담론 분석 방법 등 최근의 연구 사례들을 통하여 이 방대한 권력의 문서가 중세 사회사 및 심성사 분야, 특히 국가 권력과 사회의 관계에 대한 연구에 가져다준 새로운 비전과 성과들을 소개하고자 한다. 더 나아가 역사가들이 던지는 질문과 시각에 의해 사면장이라는 기록이 얼마든지 새로운 가치를 부여받을 수 있음을 보여주고자 한다.
