Lactic acid bacteria are microorganisms that produces lactic acid by using sugar. Recently, research shows that lactic acid bacteria have a strong correlation with various diseases, and industry and the public have raised concerns over the lactic acid bacteria. While, the use of lactic acid bacteria has been continuously expanding, and the number of cases using the bacteria in pharmaceuticals has also increased. Lactic acid bacterial preparations are different from general chemical drugs and whose quality control is difficult. As a result, Ministry of Food and Drug Safety conducted several research projects, and public consultation and and established the guideline for establishment of specification for securing the quality of lactic acid bacteria preparations to be suitable for scientific and practical purposes in Korea. It is expected that this guideline will help to ensure the excellent quality of lactic acid bacteria preparation and further promote the development of lactic acid bacteria preparation.

유산균은 당을 이용하여 젖산(乳産)을 생성하는 미생물이다. 최근 유산균이 다양한 질병과의 깊은 연관성을 가 진다는 연구결과가 보고됨에 따라 학계 및 업계뿐만 아니라 국민들의 관심도 매우 높아졌다. 더불어 유산균제제의 사 용량은 지속적으로 증가하고 있으며, 의약품에 사용되는 유산균종의 수도 늘어났다. 유산균제제는 일반적인 화학적 의 약품과는 특성이 달라 품질관리에 어려움이 있다. 이에 따라 식품의약품안전평가원에서는 연구사업을 수행하고 국내 전문가와 학회의 자문 및 외부 의견 수렴을 거쳐 과학적이고 우리나라 실정에 적합한 유산균 제제 품질확보를 위한 규격설정 가이드라인을 제안하였다. 또한 동 가이드라인을 통하여 유산균 제제의 우수한 품질을 확보하고 나아가 유 산균 제제의 개발을 촉진하는 데에 도움이 될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
