- Pain is a major health problem that substantially reduces quality of life. Treatment of pain is a challenge in clinical practice as not all patients respond sufficiently to available treatments and the burden of adverse reactions may be high. With increasing attention has been drawn to the development of medicinal products for analgesics, EMA and US FDA have provided the guidances for clinical evaluation of drugs for treatment, which are intended to assist pharmaceutical companies and investigators during the development of medicinal products for the treatment of pain. Accordingly, National Institute of Food and Drug Safety Evaluation also has developed the guideline on the clinical development of new medicinal products for the treatment of pain in Korea. The scope of the present document is to provide guidance in clinical development of new medical products intended for the treatment of pain. Requirements with regard to study design, duration, target population and outcome measures are described. This guideline might be helpful to both developers and reviewers.

- 통증은 삶의 질을 상당히 저해하는 주된 건강상의 문제이다. 급속한 고령화 사회 진입에 따른 통증 치료제 수 요 확대, 보다 효과적이고 안전한 통증 치료 약물에 대한 요구에 따라 전 세계적으로 새로운 통증 치료 약물 개발에 대한 관심과 수요가 급증하고 있다. 또한, 미국 및 유럽에서는 통증 치료 약물 개발을 위한 임상시험 가이드라인을 제· 개정하여 제약업계 및 연구자의 통증 치료 약물 개발을 독려하고 있다. 국내에서도 통증 치료 약물 및 통증 관리에 대한 관심이 급증하고 있어 식품의약품안전평가원에서는 국내외 가이드라인 등을 검토하여 진통제 임상시험 가이드 라인을 마련하였다. 본 가이드라인에는 통증 치료 약물 개발 시 임상시험의 설계 및 고려사항 등 임상시험 수행과 관 련한 권고사항을 제시하였다. 동 가이드라인을 통하여 통증 치료 약물 개발 및 안전성·유효성 평가 시 도움이 될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
