The purpose of this study is to investigate historical background how the golf is settled and reached to its development among a lot of sports in U.K. as suzerain state of modern sport. This study was to execute the analysis⋅ review of primary and secondary sources through the literature review method collectively summarizing domestic and foreign golf-related historic literature. From the result of this research above, it may be summed up as follows. First, the tradition of British athleticism has been established since Tudor Period, and the support of sport by royal and aristocratic circles promoted the cultural development of British sport. The history of golf has been developed in connection with the royal family. The golf developed focused on Scottish royal family and aristocratic circles since about 15th Century was representative sport of upper class as Scotland brand. Second, this study has found out that there was a lot of diversity in developmental background of British sport. The educational institutes in charge of education for the upper class encouraged the sport activities, and the religious institutions organized the sport clubs in process of evangelization and enlightenment campaign. The population participating in sports was rapidly increased in process of following the aristocrat's tradition and custom by increasing the middle class in hierarchy. Contrary to team sports like soccer, rugby, and rowing, etc., the largest clear background of developing the golf was athleticism in the royal family and upper class.

본 연구는 근대 스포츠의 종주국인 영국의 많은 스포츠 속에서 골프가 어떻게 정착하고 발전에 이르게 되었는지에 대한 역사적 배경을 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 국내외 골프관련 역사 문헌을 총체적으로 정리하는문헌고찰법을 통해 1⋅2차 자료를 분석⋅고찰하여 수행하였다. 고찰 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 영국의 스포츠 애호 전통은 튜더 시대부터 확립되었고, 왕실과 귀족 사회의 스포츠에 대한 후원은 영국 스포츠 문화의 발달을 촉진했다. 골프의 역사도 왕실과 연계되어 발전하였다. 15세기경부터 스코틀랜드 왕실과 귀족사회를 중심으로 발달된 골프는 스코틀랜드 브랜드의 대표적인 상류층 스포츠였다. 둘째, 영국 스포츠의 발달에는 다양한 배경이 존재함을 확인하였다. 상류층의 교육을 담당했던 교육기관에서 스포츠 활동을 장려하고, 종교기관은 복음과 교화의과정으로 스포츠 클럽을 조직하였다. 그리고 중산 계층이 계급 상승을 한 후 귀족의 전통과 관습을 따르는 과정에서 스포츠 인구가 급증하였다. 그러나 축구, 럭비, 조정 등과 같은 팀 스포츠와는 달리 골프 발달의 가장 큰 명확한 배경은 왕실과 상류층의 스포츠 애호주의였다.
