Originally published in 1942, The Stranger by Albert Camus was translated by Keisaku Kubota and published in the literary journal Shincho in June, 1951. This sparked a controversial debate between Kazuo Hirotsu and Mitsuo Nakamura. Hirotsu’s critique centered on the view that The Stranger only considered “WHAT IS LIFE”, but not “HOW TO LIVE”. On the other hand, Nakamura argued that these are same issues, and it is realism in the Taisho period to set them apart. Regarding this debate, Rinzo Shiina agreed with Hirotsu’s view, and added that “WHAT IS LIFE” is a temporal consideration, while “HOW TO LIVE” is not. Shiina also mentioned the absurd of Camus exists in the antinomy between freedom and the World. However he argued that the antinomy do not exist at the outset, because Man do not exist without relation to the World. This paper considers how Rinzo’s ideal attitude differs from Camus.

広津は、「異邦人」には「WHAT IS LIFE」しかなくて、「HOW TO LIVE」が考えられていないと批判した。
