This paper has explored the characteristics emerged from the way in which reduplication-style Chinese onomatope functions in sentence, centered on the examples of its usage that appear in literary works of the Meiji period. Further, it has also examined the overall historical background behind the genesis and subsequent usage of Chinese onomatope on the basis of dictionaries containing the associated examples of classical Chinese and Japanese literatures, and then analyzed individual words whose meaning changed in the process of their adoption. First, the Meiji-period writers were deemed to have attempted considerably to polish and then achieve the originality of their own writing style, in order that its unique characteristics in sentence can be preserved, by matching Japanese “native” onomatope – colloquial/informal – with Chinese characters in an appropriate manner. Second, Chinese onomatope has also been actively adopted in order to enable onomatope-modified subject(s) to be specified, limited and distinguished. Last, when adopted in Japanese, Chinese onomatope has its meaning, especially associated with words that depict diverse psychological and bodily feelings, such as gijōgo (psychomime (擬情語)), remain relatively intact. On the other hand, the onomatope that depicts natural sound, shape and state of object(s) is found to be adopted with their original meaning partially changed.

본고는 명치기 문학작품 속 첩어형태의 한어 오노마토페 용례를 대상으로 문장에서 어떠한 역할을 하는지 특징적인 면을 살피고자 하였다. 나아가 중국 고전문헌 및 일본 고전문헌의 용례를 수록하고 있는 대사전류를 토대로 그 전거(典據)의 유무를 밝히고, 수용과정에서 의미용법에 변화를 보인 개별어를 분석하였다. 먼저, 속어적 성향이 강한 오노마토페에 한어를 적절하게 대응시켜 전체적인 문장의 격조를 떨어뜨리지 않고 문체를 완성한 명치기 작가들의 시도를 엿볼 수 있다. 또한, 문장에서 오노마토페가 수식하고 있는 대상의 구체화‧한정 및 구분을 도모하기 위해 한어 오노마토페를 적극적으로 도입하고 있다. 또한 한어 오노마토페가 일본어로 수용될 시, 사람이 느끼는 다양한 감정을 나타내는 의정어(擬情語)의 경우는 본래의 의미가 유지되어 수용되지만, 자연계의 소리나 사물의 모양이나 상태를 묘사하는 경우, 의미 일부는 소실되어 유입된 것을 알 수 있었다.
