Prayer is the most important medium for spiritual conversation and growth of Christians as well as one of the core functions for ministers toward ordinary people in the church. From that aspect, prayer is not supposed to be considered as a religious behavior or tool for the accomplishment of personal wish. A deeper theological meaning should be within it and there should be an expectation of the foundational role for the indication of theological direction and actual change regarding prayer. This study will explore theological understandings of prayer based on the above presupposition and concentrate on the function of prayer as a way of spiritual growth through the recovery of God’s sovereignty and the change for human beings’ meaning of life. To do this task, it will start from the a brief introduction of basic Christian understanding of prayer to discover any common feature upon it and will try to analyze if such discovery will be appropriate for the aforementioned objective of this study. In this process, an attempt to widen the range of Korean churches’ relatively simple awareness on prayer and strive to shift the location of prayer from the margin to the center of theological education by introduction of various traditions about prayer will be done. A special attention will be on the fact that this study will not exclusively raise any type of prayer beyond anything else and will not allow it to evaluate the rest of other forms of prayers with the notion of competition. Because the intention of putting a privilege on a particular type of prayer and highly emphasizing its value would generate a big danger of egoistic self-satisfaction and aggressive tendency. By the construction of this order of contents, the educational ground of Christian prayer will be achieved for further development beyond the limitation of either the establishment of personal wish or inner meditation.

기도는 그리스도인들의 영적 소통과 성장을 위한 중요 수단인 동시에 일반 신자들의 신앙생활을 위한 목회의 핵심 기능들 중 하나이다. 그런 측면에서 기도는 단순히 여러 종교적 행위들 중 하나로 평가하거나 마음의 소망을 이루기 위한 성취의 수단으로 이해되어서는 안 된다. 기도의 행위 자체에 이미 깊은 신학적 의미가 담겨져 있어야 하고, 기도를 통한 신학의 방향 제시 및 실제적 변화를 위한 초석의 역할까지 기대할 수 있어야 한다. 이런 전제를 바탕으로 본고는 기도에 담긴 신학적 이해들을 개략적으로 살펴보고, 특히 하나님의 권위 회복을 통한 영적 성장과 사람의 존재의미 변화를 위한 기도의 역할에 초점을 맞추려고 노력했다. 이 과제들을 달성하기 위해 우선 기독교의 기본적인 기도 이해를 통해 기도에 관한 신학적 해석들의 공통점을 살펴봄으로써 앞서 설명한 본고의 목적과 부합한지 진단하였다. 또한 한국 개신교회의 기도 이해의 폭을 넓히고, 여러 교회 전통에서 발견되는 기도의 방식들을 소개하는 방법을 채택하여 기도의 위치를 신학교육의 변방으로부터 중심으로 변화시키려고 시도했다. 하지만 여러 기도방식을 소개하는 방식이 특정 기도방식에 절대적 가치를 부여하거나, 그것을 중심으로 다른 기도 방식들을 하향 평가하는 경쟁구도를 지양하도록 주의를 기울였다. 특정한 방식에 우선순위를 부여하고 그것을 적극 장려하는 의도는 자칫 이기적인 자기만족과 배타적인 공격성을 야기할 위험이 다분하기 때문이다. 이런 일련의 내용 구성을 통해 기독교의 기도 이해는 개인의 소망 성취나 내면 수양 정도의 한계로부터 벗어나는 폭 넓은 교육의 토대가 마련될 것이다.
