The purpose of this paper is to study , the designated Important Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 5, from the semiotics perspective. Heungbu-jeon, a widely known epic Korean oral literature has been passed down many generations in both its original Pansori version as well as other forms and is continually revisited and explored in different artistic mediums today. The structure of Heungbu-jeon makes it possible to allow an analysis of the text’s surface structural layer as well as an inherent analysis in consideration of the complementary relations. In addition, this study seeks to understand how sense of meaning is created and portrayed in the narrative. Heungbu-jeon was examined in consideration of the sense of meaning and narrative structure, specifically by substituting the text within the semiotic rectangle and analyzing the binary term of its inherent structure, and the sequence segmentation, narrative schema and the Actanial model as applied to the narrative structure. Through this study, we can examine how meaning is generated through the structural analysis of Heungbu-jeon and explore how a piece of oral narrative continues to be applied significantly even in today’s culture and medium.

『흥부전』은 중요무형문화재 제5호 판소리계소설로 오랜 세월 판소리와 함께 향유되며 현재에도 여러 콘텐츠로 활용되고 있는 구비문학이다. 본 고는 구비전승된 작품임에도 불구하고 현재까지 그 맥락을 이어 오고 있 는『 흥부전』을 기호학을 토대로 분석하는 것에 목적이 있다. 기호학을 토 대로 분석하는 것은 텍스트 자체가 갖고 있는 표면적 층위에서의 분석부 터 서사논리에 따른 텍스트 내재적인 분석이 가능하기 때문이다. 또 이를 통해서 의미가 어떻게 생성되고 있는지를 파악할 수 있다. 따라서『 흥부전』을 Greimas 기호학 이론 중 텍스트의 기호-설화구조를 바 탕으로 살펴보았다. 연구의 출발은 Greimas 기호학에 대한 개념을 재정리하 고, 그 이론을 바탕으로 『흥부전』을 분석한다. 즉 Greimas의 의미생성 행정 중 심층구조에서의 이원항, 기호사각형을 분석하고, 설화구조에서의 시퀀스분할, 설화 도식, 행위소 모델분석을 한다. 이를 통해서 『흥부전』의 형식적 분석을 통한 의미생산 과정을 살펴보고, 구비문학『 흥부전』이 어떠한 이유로 다양한 콘텐츠로 활용되면서 현재까지 전해지고 있는지를 재조명 하고자 한다.
