The purpose of this research is to draw out a factor that composes the religious geography of new religions in Korea by quantitatively analyzing believers’ faith-based characteristics and religious directionality. First, I verify the differences in the faithful characteristics of believers of new religions and existing religions by comparing the existing data with the results reported in Korea by Gallup in 2014. Second, I will analyze the religious directionality of believers of new religions by comparing the various new religions in Korea. Believers regard religious directionality as their reformative or self-disciplinary abilities; in a sense, these represent the social role of religion, which is based on believers’ values and ideologies. In other words, religious directionality refers to believers’ recognition that there are two social functions of religion. Therefore, I will perform a comparative analysis of believers’ reformative or self-discipline constructs for each new religion, and the results will be put to practical use as a means of understanding the religious geography of new religions in Korea.

본 조사의 목적은 ‘신자들의 신앙적 특징’과 ‘종교적 지향성’과의 관계를 수량 적으로 분석하여, ‘한국 신종교 지형’을 파악하는 하나의 요인을 도출하려는 것이 다. 첫째, 신앙적 특징을 확인하기 위해서 한국갤럽의 ｢한국인의 종교 조사｣의 통 계분석과 비교하여, 신종교 신자들과 기성종교 신자들과의 차이를 비교 분석한 다. 다음으로 종교적 지향성에 대해서는 신종교 교단별 비교분석을 한다. 본 연구 에서 사용하는 종교적 지향성이란, 신자들이 스스로의 종교적 이념과 가치관에 입각하여, 종교의 개인적, 사회적 역할에 대해서 ‘혁신적 성격’을 가지고 있다는 인식과 ‘자기수양적 성격’을 가지고 있다는 인식을 말한다. 즉 여기에서 사용하는 종교적 지향성이란 이 두 가지 신자들의 종교에 대한 인식을 가리킨다. 따라서 신 종교 신자들이 가지고 있는 종교적 혁신 의식과 자기수양 의식을 교단별로 비교 분석하여, 한국 신종교의 지형을 파악하는 하나의 분석 수단으로 활용하려는 것이다.
