Chosun authorities recognized Donghak as a threat to the ruling feudal order and the threat principle to vested interests, and executed the first religious leader, Suwun on charges of deluding the world and deceiving the people. 조선정부는 동학을 봉건사회 질서와 지배세력의 기득권을 위협하는 원리로 인식하고, 제1세 교조 수운을 혹세무민의 죄목으로 처형하였다. 그 이후 1890년 초까지 동학교단은 수운의 교조신원운동이라는 합법적인 청원운동을 전개하면서 동학을 세상에 드러내려는 ‘신원현도’(伸寃顯道) 의식과 상관연동을 이루게 된다. 당시의 동학교단은 ‘신소제도’(伸訴制度)를 통해, 조선정부의 공식 인정을 받기 위해 다각적인 노력과 함께 집단적 사위운동을 꾸준히 전개하게 된다. 동학교단은 동학교도와 농민들의 ‘공공연대’(公共連帶) 의식으로 상관연동을 이루면서 공주취회(公州聚會)를 통해, 지방 관리들의 수탈 금지라는 충청감사 감결(甘結)을 얻어낸다. 민족주의 의식의 ‘척왜양창의’(斥倭洋倡義) 실천을 강조하면서 삼례취회를 개최한다. 또한 보은집회와 같은 시기에 전라도 금구현의 원평에서 금구집회도 개최한다. 금구집회는 척왜양의 기치를 전면에 내세우면서 정치집회로 전환하면서 사회혁명의 ‘공공연대’ 의식을 강화시켰다. ‘무장’에서 대규모의 봉기를 실현시킨 민중혁명가, 녹두장군 전봉준은 ‘다시개벽’ 의식과 연동하여 투쟁의식을 강화하면서 동학농민혁명을 주도적으로 전개하게 된다. 동학의 교조신원운동은 각종 큰 집회를 통하여 ‘반봉건’, ‘척왜양창의’의 기치(旗幟)를 내걸게 되지만, 정치적으로 대정부 투쟁과 상관연동을 이룬다. 결국 민족의 근대사회 개혁실천 의식을 갖춘, 수운의 ‘다시개벽’ 혁신을 이 땅에 성취하기 위하여 동학농민혁명의 조직기반을 구축한다. 동학농민군들은 평화적 시위에서 투쟁의 결의대회로 전환하면서 대규모의 ‘동학농민혁명’을 일으키고, 동시에 ‘다시개벽’ 의식을 상관연동으로 살려내면서, 정미의병(丁未義兵) 전쟁에 이르기까지 항일독립 투쟁의식으로 전환하는 실천적 계기를 마련하게 된다.
