Issue of Donghak Modernity and Modernity Discussion were the mostimportant objects of discussion. In particular, the Heaven Viewpoint ofDonghak has a modern feature which can be replaced with Heaven Viewpointof Confucian and Modernity Discussion focuses on whether the heavenviewpoint of Donghak promotes births of individual or not. For deepeningand expanding this theme, philosophical and logical study which focus on theHeaven Viewpoint are needed. In spite of preliminary study of this theme hasbeen done variously, this study only focused on the viewpoint of DonghakRevolution. Therefore, in this study, I will suggest a philosophical base ofKorea's modern discourses which is based on Donghak Scriptures. This study is about the Donghak-Thought which is summarized intoSicheonju(侍天主), Not being so, and yet being so.(不然其然), and theGaebyeok-Thought(개벽사상) . I will discuss its content and meaning. In particular, the important thing in this study is that a modern change inappearance of modern thought of Donghak is presented by applying theachievements of this study to identity formation of Namwon which is called thesecond sacred place of Donghak. In section 2, I discussed korean modernity discourses focusing on theaspect of the Heaven Viewpoint. In particular, I emphasized that the HeavenViewpoint of Donghak is an alternative paradigm of the Heaven Viewpoint ofConfucian. This paradigm have an effect on building Korean modern societyand the birth of the individual play an important role behind it. In section 3, Iargued the feature of modern thinking in the scripture of Donghak focusing on Sicheonju. Not being so, and yet being so. the Gaebyeok-Thought. Sicheonju isthe ideal foundation of modern viewpoint. Not being so, and yet being so is thelogic of cognition, and Gaebyeok-Thought is base of the necessity of civilizationchange. In section 4, I discussed that modern thinking of Donghak plays theimportant role in shaping identity of Namwon and its feature is ‘Spirit of AllPeople’, ‘Spirit of the Resistance’, and ‘Spirit of the Independence’.

동학의 근대적 사유와 근대성 논의는 한국의 근대성 담론에서 중요한 논의대상 중의 하나였다. 특히 동학의 천관이 유교적 천관을 대체하는 근대적인성격을 지녔으며, 개인의 탄생을 촉진하는 역할을 했는지가 근대성 담론의 중심에 있었다. 이 주제를 심화하고 확산하기 위해서는 천관을 중심으로 한 철학적이며 사상적인 연구가 필요하다. 그럼에도 불구하고 지금까지 이에 대한선행 연구는 다양하게 진행되어 왔음에도 불구하고 주로 동학혁명의 관점에치중되어 왔다. 본 연구에서는 동학경전을 근거로 삼아 한국의 근대성 담론의 철학적 근거를 제시하고자 한다. 동학 경전에 나타난 동학사상을 ‘시천주’, ‘불연기연’, ‘개벽사상’으로 요약하고 그 내용과 의미를 논의하는 것이 이 연구의 핵심 내용을 이룬다. 특히 이연구의 성과를 동학의 제2의 성지라 불리는 남원의 정체성 문제에 적용함으로써 동학의 근대적 사유의 현대적 변용을 제시한다는 점도 중요한 연구 내용이다. 2장에서는 한국의 근대성 담론을 천관의 변화를 중심으로 논의하였다. 동학의 천관은 유교적 천관의 대안 패러다임으로 한국의 근대 사회 형성에 영향을 미쳤고, 그 이면에는 개인의 탄생이 중요한 역할을 한다는 점을 논의하였다. 3장에서는 동학 경전 속의 근대적 사유의 특징을 시천주, 불연기연, 개벽사상을 중심으로 논의하였다. 시천주는 근대적 세계관 형성의 이념적 토대가되며, 불연기연은 인식논리이며, 개벽사상은 문명변화의 필연성의 근거임을논의하였다. 4장에서는 동학의 근대적 사유가 남원의 정체성 형성에 중요한역할을 한다는 점과, 그 정신은 만인정신, 저항정신, 독립정신이다는 점을 제시하였다.
