The purpose of this article is to investigate ‘the Educational Movement for the Children’ as part of ‘the Project of the Enlightenment’ of Donghak·Cheondokyo through the concept of the structural transformation of the public sphere. Such an investigation is focused on the understanding of the formation of the relation between the belief in the religious sphere and the process of socialization in the society. In the occidental history it can be explained the relation between the public sphere and religion as an inverse relationship. That is, the bourgeois public sphere could be conceived above all as the sphere of private people come together as a public. Consequently the feudal powers, namely the church, the prince, and the nobility, who were the carriers of the representative publicness, disintegrated in a process of polarization. After all the anchoring in divine authority that it represented, - that is, religion - became a private matter. In contrast to occidental religious context we could observe that it takes the different path of development in Donghak·Cheondokyo. In it, namely the extension of the religion sphere is at the same time established the extension of the public sphere. We could explain the reason of this direct opposition to the occidental public sphere as the element of the post-modernity in Donghak·Cheondokyo. But at this point it is ceratin that this try is not enough to be well founded. It is necessary to have more creative methods which could clarify the reason of such difference between them beyond the achievement thus far.

본 연구는 동학·천도교의 ‘계몽 프로젝트’의 일환인 ‘어린이교육운동’을 공론장의 개념 안에서 고찰한다. 그러한 고찰은 종교적 영역의 신앙과 사회적 영역의 사회화의 과정이 어떠한 관계로 이루어졌나를 탐구하는 것에 초점을 맞춘다. 서구사회의 역사 안에서 공론장과 종교의 관계는 한 마디로 반비례의 역학관계로 풀이할 수 있다. 즉 시민 공론장은 무엇보다 먼저 공중으로 결집한 사적 개인들의 영역으로 파악된다. 그러한 결과로 봉건권력, 즉 대의적 공론장을 담지하던 교회와 제후 그리고 귀족 신분들을 양극화시키면서 해체시킨다. 마침내 교회가 대표하는 신적 권위는 사적인 것으로 전락한다. 그러나 동학·천도교에서는 그러한 구도가 서구의 맥락과 다르게 전개됨을 관찰할 수 있다. 즉 종교의 확대와 더불어 공론 영역의 확대가 동시에 구축되는 모습을 띄고 있는 것이다. 서구의 맥락과는 정반대의 모습을 보이는 동학·천도교에 있어서의 종교와 공공영역 발전의 이유를 ‘탈근대의 사유’로 설명할 수 있다. 그러나 이 시점에서 확실한 사실은 동학·천도교의 성격이 근본적으로 서구의 맥락과는 다름의 근거를 분명히 설명할 수 있는 창조적 독해의 방법이 그 동안의 성과 외에 더 필요하다는 것이다.
