Yuhwagiyeon is a work that reveals the recognition of sexual identity underlying the consciousness of the audience and the narrator. Yoochun, whose body is not distinguished by dichotomous sex, shows a sense of guilt and depression, wandering and loss of self-esteem, but presents a different relationship model from that of a traditional couple. However, while showing signs of a third sex, he creates his own identity as a male in order to live up to the hopes of his surroundings and plays a male to live as a socially male. This passing affects the narrative strategy, so the new possibility of sex identity, which the first half of the work deals with importantly, is replaced by the reinforcement of popular heroism in the latter half, and rather the reactionary narrative is proceeding. Nevertheless, Yuhwagiyeon reveals the awareness of sex, social prejudice, and realistic response to it, as it moves away from common sense and myths about sex, body, and identity. It is also a noteworthy work in that it allows us to discover absurdities and gaps in existing sexuality through a person with a third sexual identity.

<유화기연>은 향유자와 서술자의 의식 저변에 놓인 성정체성에 대한 문제의식을 담은 작품이다. 이분법적 성별로 구분되지 않는 몸을 지닌 유춘이 신체적 특성으로 인해 죄의식과 우울감을 지니고 방황을 하면서 자존감을 잃은 모습을 보이지만 다른 인물과는 새로운 관계 모델을 제시한다. 그러나 그는 제 3의 성에 대한 징후를 드러내면서도 주변의 바람에 부응하기 위해서 남성의 성정체성을 만들어가고 사회적으로 남성으로 살아가기 위해 남성을 ‘연기’한다. 이러한 패싱은 서사 전략에도 영향을 미쳐서 작품 전반부가 문제삼는 성정체성의 새로운 가능성이 후반부에서는 통속적 영웅담의 강화로 대체되며, 오히려 남성적 몸과 기질을 부각시키는 반동적 전개를 필요로 한다. 그럼에도 <유화기연>은 성, 몸, 그리고 정체성에 대한 상식과 통념으로부터 조금씩 벗어나면서 공고한 성 인식, 사회적 편견, 이에 대한 현실적 대응 등을 고스란히 보여준다. 또 소설 속에서 성정체성에 대한 새로운 경험을 통해 기존 성 인식의 부조리와 빈틈을 발견하도록 한다는 점에서 주목할 만한 작품이다.
