Art always explains core issue caused from the lives of due period visually. In this meaning, art is like a portrait showing the period or a mirror reflecting the reality. Artists are those who shape the times they live as art going through this as individuals and human in daily life. In particular, when highlighting the matter of life by art, above all, the issue of critical life will be emphasized. Currently in Korean modern art, the works with the theme of family have been increased. As shown from this, the family is in problem or further in crisis. This paper searched the family image reflected to Korean modern arts. We traced how family concept has been changed through each period and how it was shown to art works. The image of family reflected to the history of Korean modern art shows family relation of due period and changing history of family concept. The family issue has been emphasized most urgently than any other issues by Korean War. Traditional concept of family was broken while the importance of family was recognized going through part with, death of family members, and the pains of losing family and hometown, and finally real concept of family left only poverty and abnormality. Ideal family concept may be dreamed by everyone due to these pains. However, now the concept of family has been settled as mental trauma to many people. Rapid modernization and industrialization in 1970's dissolved traditional family concept based on agricultural economy. As farmers moved to the city, family matter of those who live as urban poor labors and are isolated have become an issue, and the works which showed contradiction of due Korean society through family have emerged. After 1980's, existing patriarchal family system began to be criticized in feminism vision, establishment of new family system was discussed, and the family as a system began to discuss. Currently, artists descript the dissolution of family system itself according to new type of family system or disorder of traditional value. Like this, the art which makes the family as the material for work shows the expression of the Korean modern histories as they were which have been going through crossing and change between tradition and modernity. The image which shows the family condenses and stores all things of a society.

미술은 늘 당대의 삶에서 유래하는 핵심적 문제를 시각적으로 해명하고자 한다. 미술은 그런 의미에서 시대를 보는 초상이자 현실을 비추는 거울 같은 것이다. 작가들은 자신들이 사는 시대를 한 개인으로서, 일상의 삶을 사는 인간으로서 똑같이 겪어내면서 이를 미술적으로 형상화하는 이들이다. 특히나 미술이 삶의 문제를 조명한다고 했을 때 무엇보다도 위기적인 삶의 문제가 우선적으로 대두 될 것이다. 최근 한국 현대미술에서는 유독 가족을 다룬 작업들이 많아졌다. 그만큼 가족이 문제적이거나 위기이기에 그럴 것이다. 이 글은 한국 근. 현대미술에 반영된 가족이미지를 찾아보았다. 각 시대를 겪으면서 가족 개념이 어떻게 변화되어갔으며 그것이 또 어떤 식으로 미술작품에 표현되어 왔는지를 추적해보았다. 한국근현대미술사에 투영된 가족의 이미지는 당대의 가족관계, 가족 개념의 변천사를 압축해서 보여준다. 한국전쟁은 가족문제를 그 어떤 것보다 절실한 것으로 부각시켰다. 상당수가 가족구성원과의 이별, 죽음, 이산과 망향의 고통을 격어내면서 가족의 소중함을 뼈저리게 체득하는 동시에 전통적인 가족주의는 조각나 버렸고 현실적인 가족은 가난과 불구적인 것이었을 뿐이다. 그런 상처는 단란하고 이상적 가족상을 역설적으로 꿈꾸게 했는지도 모른다. 그러나 이제 가족은 많은 이들의 정신적 외상으로 자리잡게 된다. 1970년대 급속한 근대화, 산업화는 농촌경제에 기반한 전통적인 가족주의를 송두리째 흔들어놓았다. 이농에 따라 도시빈민노동자로 살아가는 가난하고 소외된 이들의 가족문제가 불거졌고 따라서 당시 한국사회의 모순을 가족을 통해 고발하는 작업들이 등장했다. 80년대 이후 페미니즘적 시각에서 기존 가부장적 가족제도가 비판되고 새로운 가족제도의 정립이란 논의가 모색되는 한편 제도로서의 가족이 본격적으로 논의되기 시작했다. 최근에 작가들은 이전과는 무척 달라진 새로운 형태의 가족제도나 가치관의 혼란에 따라 가족제도 자체가 의문시되고 해체를 겪어나가는 것을 묘사하고 있다. 이렇듯 가족을 소재로 다룬 미술 속에는 세계에서 유래가 없을 정도로 전통과 현대의 현기증 나는 교차와 변질의 시간을 체험해온 한국의 근.현대사의 표정이 적나라하게 엉켜있다. 이렇게 가족을 다룬 이미지에는 한 사회의 모든 것들이 응축되고 저장되어 있는 것이다.
