Herbert Marcuse wrote a number of influential political writings on politics and social change through his lifetime. His most important writings are“ Reason and Revolution (1941)”,“ Eros and Civilization (1955)”,“ One-Dimensional Man (1964)”,“ Essay on Liberation (1969)”, and“ The Aesthetic Dimension (1978)”. However, his political thoughts have been critically misunderstood in many ways. In this paper, I shall investigate his political thought in following order. 1) I shall consider the evolution of the ideological background and the development of critical theory that Marcuse attempted to show. 2) I will examine what is called the “transcendence of reason,”which gives us the normative nature of his critical research method. Finally, I shall concentrate on Marcuse’s notion of “utopian human emancipation”, which explains his practical strategy of liberty and happiness of all men. It is my hope that this study will be served as the foundation for further investigation of Marcuse’s ideas of good democracy and human rights.

이 글의 목표는 마르쿠제의 대표적인 저서인『이성과 혁명Reason and Revolution』(1941),『 에로스와 문명Eros and Civilization』(1955),『일차원적 인간 One-Dimensional Man』(1964),『 해방론An Essay on Liberation』(1969),『 미적 차원The Aesthetic Dimension』(1978)을 중심으로 1) 마르쿠제의 비판이론이 전개 되는 사상적 배경과 행로의 변화과정을 주요 저서에 등장한 다양한 개념어들을 통해 소개하고, 2) 이성의 초월성에 근거한 그의 비판적 연구 방법의 규범적 특성 을 살펴보고, 끝으로 3) 만인의 자유와 행복이란 마르쿠제의 유토피아적 인간해 방의 실천 전략들에 주목하면서 향후 실질적 인권과 좋은 민주주의를 주제로 마 르쿠제를 연구하기 위한 토대를 마련해 보고자 한다.
