Seventy percent of merging firms fails to reach their initial goals of the acquisitions and ends up with disappointing results. Assuming that the success of M&As is largely dependent on how well to combine the merging and merged firms together throughout the post-merger integration (PMI) process, this study tries to investigate what are the determinants that lead the merging firm with the successful result and maximum value. In particular, this study will focus on the issue of integration speed by arguing that maintaining not too fast or slow but relevant speed of post-merger integration is critical to the success of the M&As. Given this premise, this study provides conceptual framework to guide how to select relevant integration speed under the various circumstances during the post merger integration procedure. Four factors are suggested as determinants of deciding relevant integration speed: integration level, external relatedness, cultural fit and attributes of shared resources. Using these variables, this study suggests conceptual framework to explain how each variable would influence the performance of M&As depending on different degree of integration speed. The suggested framework will raise a new research issue of integration speed including its impact on the M&As performance.

인수합병기업의 약 70%가량은 인수합병 이후 통합의 실패로 인해 초기목표를 달성하지 못하고 있다. 본 연구는 인수 후 통합의 성패에 미치는 다양한 요인 중에서 통합속도를 중심으로 고찰해 보고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 인수 후 통합과정이 너무 빠르거나 혹은 너무 느린 속도로 추진 될 경우 인수시너지효과가 크게 감소함을 전제로 한 후, 인수-피인수 기업의 대내외적 특성을 고려하여 적절한 통합속도를 선택하는 것이 인수성패의 가장 핵심임을 강조하였다. 이에 본 연구는 인수 후 적절한 통합속도를 결정하는 데 있어 필수적으로 고려하여야 할 요소로서 인수-피인수기업 간의 통합수준, 인수-피인수 가업 간 연계성, 기업 문화적 적합도, 그리고 공유 자원(역량)의 특성 등 4가지 요소를 제시하였다. 구체적으로 이 4가지 요소는 인수 후 성과에 직접적인 영향을 미치는 요소로서 각각의 개별적 수준에 따라 통합속도를 달리하였을 경우 그 성과역시 극대화될 수 있음을 제시한 후 이에 관한 연구모델을 제시하였다. 이 연구모델을 통해 경영자들이 인수 후 통합과정에서 발생할 수 있는 다양한 문제점을 통합속도를 조절함으로써 해결할 수 있는 방안을 제시하고자 한다. 동시에 연구자들에게는 인수 후 성공적 통합 요인에 관한 연구에 있어 그동안 배제되어 왔던 통합속도의 중요성을 부각시키고 향후 실증연구의 단서를 제공하고자 한다
