In this study, I examined cost efficiency of Korean banking industry using parameter of economies of scale and scope, concentration of service station, and automation. These analysis was done to overcome the limitations of production function that mixes up the input and output of banking industry, and can not include automation devices as an input variable. Also, I dissociated external product diversity and internal product diversity using a definition of working platform that is commonly used in auto industry, labour cost and material cost that traditional analysis did not, based on banks' financial statements. The result, based on regression analysis indicates that Korean banks' labour and material cost have got an economy of scale and this results is almost same as traditional results. Concerning with diversification, new working platform-needed extention gives banks a diseconomy of scope, with labour cost. But, it was also found separately that non platform-needed internal extention of diversity gives nationwide banks labour cost efficiency, and that means there are kinds of direction that extention of diversity can affect. Regional banks look suffering from increasing material cost when they are trying to extend their service station to the capital city, on the other hand, nation wide banks from labour cost. Another result says that increasing the role of banking automation devices gives every banks relative cost reduction.

본 연구에서는 우리나라 은행산업의 규모와 업무범위, 지점의 특정지역 집중, 자동화기기의 업무분담정도가 은행의 인건비와 물건비를 포함하는 관리비에 미치는 영향을 회귀분석을 통해 살펴보았다. 이는 생산함수 또는 비용함수를 사용하는 기존 은행의 효율성 관련연구에서 투입물과 산출물이 명확하지 않고 자동화기기에 대한 투자를 투입물로 분석하고 있지 못한 점, 은행산업의 업무범위 확장 전체를 일률적으로 분석하는 데서 생기는 연구결과의 불일치를 극복하기 위함이며 특히, 업무범위의 확장이 가져오는 경제적 효과를 세분하기 위해 자동차산업에서 흔히 쓰이는 플랫폼의 개념을 도입하여 새 플랫폼을 요구하는 업무범위의 확장과 그렇지 않은 범위의 확장으로 구분하여 분석을 시도했다. 분석의 결과 우리나라의 은행은 시중은행과 지방은행 모두 규모의 경제효과를 수혜하고 있으며, 외형적인 범위의 확장은 인건비를 체증, 내재적인 범위의 확장은 시중은행의 인건비에 체감하는 영향을 주는 결과를 분리하여 관측할 수 있었다. 지점의 특정지역 집중은 시중은행에게는 인건비측면에서 지방은행에게는 물건비 측면에서 부담을 주는 것으로 나타났으며 자동화기기가 창구업무를 대체하는 비중이 높아질수록 모든 은행이 인건비와 물건비면에서 관리비용 절감의 효과를 받고 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 이런 결과는 규모와 업무를 확장하고 있는 국내은행에게 비용효율 차원에서 전략적 선택의 적합성을 판단할 수 있는 근거를 일부 제시하고 있다
