This paper presents increasing impact of MNC’s political risk in Latin America focusing on the Bolivian case. Morales, the president of Bolivia, announced nationalization of foreign-owned assets on May 1, 2006. In the 1960～1970s, political risks have occurred repeatedly and have led to the nationalization of foreign-owned assets in Latin America and Africa. In the 1980～1990s, political risk did not occurred in the global economy environment. However, political risks happening in recent years such as nationalization are much more serious than previous political actions. Even if political risk is an unusual event in the world economic environment, but it is still increasing in Latin America in particular. This paper analyzes when political risk happens it is seriously unfavorable to investors and can even result in heavy loss. Therefore, Bolivia’s nationalization intimates to Korean firms exploring natural resources to strengthen its global competitiveness.

본 연구는 라틴아메리카 볼리비아에서 급증하고 있는 다국적기업의 정치적 리스크에 대해 분석하였다. 2006년 5월 1일 볼리비아 대통령 모랄레스는 외국소유 자산에 대해 국유화를 선언하였다. 1960～1970년대 남미, 아프리카를 중심으로 정치적 리스크가 반복적으로 발생하고 심지어 외국인소유자산의 국유화를 초래하였지만, 1980～1990년대 이후 정치적 리스크는 세계적으로 잘 발생하지 않았다. 그러나 최근 볼리비아에서 발생한 국유화는 이전에 발생한 정치 행위보다 더욱 심각한 수준이다. 정치적 리스크가 세계 경제에서 자주 발생하는 사건이 아님에도 불구하고 발생 가능성만으로도 투자자들의 결정에 많은 혼란을 가져오고, 심지어 투자자들에게 큰 손실을 가져올 수 있다. 그래서 볼리비아의 국유화 과정은 글로벌 경제 환경에서 경쟁력 강화를 위해 천연자원을 개발하는 한국 기업들에게 좋은 시사점을 가져다 준다.
