This paper investigates 'the origin of Hunmin-jeongeum' claimed by an anonymous Korean scholar, Yi Ik-seup(李益習) in The Korean Repository in 1892 and 1896. Especially, Yi objected to H. B. Hulbert's theory that Hunmin-jeongeum(訓民正音, the Korean Alphabet) derived from the Tibetan. Unlike Hulbert, Yi suggested that the Korean Alphabet was designed after the shape of vocal organs. This paper examines their theories and their following paper debates. Both of them proceeded their claim on the basis of the same literature on Humin-jeongeum. However, their theories were affected by their different backgrounds, that is, the West and the East, so their perspectives represented their different background knowledge of language and traditional culture. Yi could be informed of the knowledge of historical comparative linguistics through Hulbert's theory on origin of Korean alphabet, but he could not accept it. Instead, he provided the prevailing eastern linguistic knowledge regarding 'an explanation of the design of Hunmin-jeongeum”. Their debates on the origin did not provide a new productive horizon of the field. Hulbert's perspective from the western linguistic knowledge and Yi's perspective from the eastern Confucianism trapped in their repetitive fixed claims. However, the encouraging mutual influence was that due to Hulbert, Yi could approach the Korean Alphabet(한글) in the broader letter systems of Korean Buddhism and the northeast Asia. It is true that these backgrounds are implicit in the Korean Alphabet but it has been forgotten in the history of the Korean Alphabet for a long time. For Hulbert, Yi could help Hulbert to approach Korean scholars' linguistic knowledge which was produced through the mediation of the Chinese phonology. It is because Yi is a Korean scholar who internalized the knowledge and transmission of Hunmin-jeongeum (Haeryebon)(『訓民正音』(解例本)). However, their mutual productive contribution was not possible under the cultural environment at that time. It is well revealed in the fact that their theories were only grounded by the limited historical reference regarding the origin of Hunmin- jeongeum. It is well-known that hunmin-jeongeum is evaluated to be an unprecedented alphabet system which includes not only linguistic knowledge but also the historical materials. It means that regrettably Hunmin-jeoneum was beyond Hulbert and Yi's limited knowledge and imagination.

본고의 목적은 1892년, 1896년 The Korean Repository 소재 익명의 한국학자, 이익습(李益習, Yi Ik Seup)의 ‘훈민정음 기원론’을 고찰하는 데에 있다. 특히 그가 한국개신교 선교사 헐버트(Homer Bezaleel Hulbert, 1863~1949)의 ‘티베트어 문자기원설’을 반대하며 그와는 다른 ‘발음기관 상형설’을 제기한 모습과 이후 두 사람 사이 펼쳐진 지면논쟁에 대해 살폈다. 이익습, 헐버트 두 사람의 훈민정음 기원론과 이후의 지면논쟁은 동일한 한국 측 문헌자료를 기반으로 했지만, 한글을 바라보는 서양과 한국이라는 두 개의 서로 다른 언어관 및 문화전통의 만남을 함의했다. 이익습은 헐버트의 ‘훈민정음 기원론’을 통해 서구의 역사비교언어학적 지식을 접촉할 수 있었지만, 이를 수용할 수는 없었다. 이에 그는 자신이 알고 있던 훈민정음의 제자원리와 관련된 당시의 통념이자 동양의 언어학적 지식을 제시해 주었다. 두 사람의 서로 다른 훈민정음 기원론과 지면논쟁은 결코 서로에게 생산적인 새로운 논의의 지평을 열어 주지는 못했다. 한글을 바라보는, 서구의 역사비교언어학과 조선의 유학이라는 서로 다른 두 시각은 ‘티베트어 문자기원설’(헐버트)과 그에 대한 부정(이익습)이란 형태로 반복되었을 따름이다. 이익습에게 헐버트는 한글을 한국의 불교문명 또한 동북아시아의 더 많은 문자체계 속에서 상상할 수 있는 계기였으며, 이는 『훈민정음』에 ‘내재/망각’된 역사이기도 했다. 헐버트 역시 이익습을 통해 과거 한국지식인이 중국 성운학을 매개로 만들었던 언어학적 지식을 만날 수 있었다. 이익습은 당시 발견되지 않았던 『훈민정음』(해례본)의 지식을 간접적으로나마 전승, 내면화한 존재였기 때문이다. 하지만 이 당시 자료적 여건 그리고 서양인과 한국인의 상호이해의 한계 속에서 양자의 생산적인 대화는 불가능했다. 두 사람이 훈민정음의 기원문제와 관련하여 제시한 문헌이 어디까지나 역사적 사료로 한정되는 모습은 이러한 사실을 잘 보여준다. 역사적 사료이자 언어학적 지식이 함께 수록되어 있는 『훈민정음』이라는 세계에 유례없는 이 서적의 존재를 상상하는 것은, 그만큼 두 사람에게는 불가능한 일이었기 때문이다.
