Climate change is an environmental and economic issue that has broad influences on the dimensions of space, time and species. Climate change is also an issue of survival as it can bring damage and loss to life and property. Active response to climate change protects peace and reduces the potential of conflict and dispute, exclusion and discrimination, military conflict and war. This study is based on the recognition of the intimate connection between climate change and peace. It explores how climate change and peace are related, how we must respond to climate change in order to protect international and domestic peace, and what kind of role religion plays in the response to climate change. The issue of climate change requires capital and technical investment in order to implement mitigation measures like improving energy efficiency, expanding the use of renewable energy and increasing carbon sinks and to implement adaptation measures that are based on the understanding of climate change impacts and vulnerability; however, solving the issue of climate change also requires the recognition of the “uncomfortable truth” and changes in lifestyle. Religion plays an important role in this context. The religious circles in Korea place focus on the changes made in one’s own life to reduce energy consumption. These religious circles must go beyond their current efforts for climate change mitigation so that they can instigate changes in the lifestyles and methods of energy use in the whole society. Moreover, they must expand their interests to the scope of climate change adaptation and focus attention towards people that are extremely vulnerable and exposed to climate change disasters due to their inability to prepare adaptation measures and also international and domestic forced immigrants that arise from climate change disasters.

기후변화는 공간적으로나 시간적으로, 또 종의 차원에서 광범위한 영향을 미치는 환경문제 이자 경제문제이며, 재산과 생명의 손상과 손실을 가져올 수 있기에 생존의 문제이기도 하다. 적 극적인 기후변화 대응은 갈등과 분쟁, 배제와 차별, 무력 분쟁과 전쟁의 가능성을 낮추면서 평화 를 지키는 일이기도 하다. 이 글에서는 기후변화와 평화문제가 긴밀하게 연계되어 있다는 문제 의식을 바탕으로 다양한 사례를 통해 두 사안이 어떻게 관련되어 있는지를 확인하면서 세계 평 화와 국가 내 평화를 지키기 위해 기후변화에 어떻게 대응해 나가야 할지, 특히 이러한 기후변화 대응 과정에서 종교가 어떤 역할을 해야 할지 모색하였다. 기후변화 대응은 에너지 효율 개선과 재생가능에너지 확대, 탄소흡수원 확대와 같은 완화방안의 이행이나 기후변화 영향과 취약성에 대한 파악을 기초로 한 적응 방안의 이행을 위해 자본과 기술의 투입이 필요한 문제이기도 하지 만 “불편한 진실”을 인식하고 생활습관과 행태의 변화를 통해 해결해야 할 문제이기도 하다. 이 맥락에서 종교의 역할이 중요하다. 한국의 종교계는 스스로의 삶의 변화를 통해 에너지 소비를 줄이는 데 관심을 두고 있다. 이제는 이러한 기후변화 완화 노력을 보다 적극적으로 경주해나감 으로써 전 사회적 에너지 이용 방식과 삶의 양식을 변화시켜 나가야 할 뿐 아니라 기후변화 적응 영역으로까지 관심을 확장해서 기후재난에 보다 취약하지만 적응 방안을 마련하지 못해 기후 위 험에 보다 심각하게 노출된 자들과 국내외 기후재난에 따른 이주민에 관심을 두어야 한다.
