The Koryo spirituality is a minority group spirituality manifested in the upright faith, upright life, upright church movement that had been developed by a few leaders of the Korean presbyterian church, who were imprisoned on Liberation Day in 1945, having participated in Shinto shrine worship resistance movement during the Japanese occupation. Korea Theological School(founded in 1946) as the epicenter of the Koryo spirituality was established for the Reformed orthodoxy to counter the liberal theology of the Chosun Theological School(approved by the General Assembly of the Korean Presbyterian Church) led by pro-Japanese theologians who had actively taken part in Shinto shrine worship. The Koryo spirituality is an experiential spirituality based on the Word and prayer, a spirituality characterized by self-denial & loyalty to Christ, supernatural intimacy with the Lord, repentance and sanctification, communal spirituality for church-renewal, resistance and struggle against the injustice of the powers, diakonia for the socially disadvantaged and a spirituality seeking God’s glory. Theologically, the Koryo spirituality corresponds with Calvin's reformed theology, and grounded on Luther's theology of the cross. Given that the Koryo spirituality bloomed into a life and faith of martyrdom in the Korean soil, and by the Korean faith and the Korean sentiment, the Koryo spirituality is the most Korean and at the same time most biblical spirituality, which could be regarded as the Korean version of Reformed spirituality following the spirituality of the Early church and the Reformed age. In this regard the Koryo spirituality is a gift given to the Korean church by God and a noble spiritual heritage which should be shared with churches around the world. Especially, the Koryo spirituality presents the direction for today’s Korean church, which is rapidly declining with the separation of spirituality and theology, having lost its upright faith and identity as a church by the prevalence of the theology of glory. To rediscover and recover the Koryo spirituality which the Korean church has overlooked over the decades is now a pressing issue.

고려파 영성은 일제 강점기 신사참배 반대로 투옥된 장로교 소수 지도자들이 해방과 함께 출옥하면서 신사참배로 무너진 한국교회 재건을 위한 목적으로 전개한 바른 신앙, 바른 생활, 바른 교회 운동 속에 발현된 소수파 영성이다. 고려신학교(1946년 개교)는 신사참배에 앞장선 친일파 신학자들이 주도한 조선신학교(총회 인준신학교)의 자유주의 신학에 대항하여 설립된 정통신학, 특별히 개혁주의 신학을 지향하는 신학교로서 고려파 영성운동의 진원지였다. 고려파 영성은 말씀과 기도중심의 체험적 영성, 자기부정과 그리스도에 대한 충성, 주님과의 신비적 친교, 회개와 성화, 교회쇄신을 지향하는 공동체적 영성, 불의한 권세에 대한 저항과 투쟁, 사회적 약자를 향한 디아코니아, 하나님 영광을 지향하는 영성이다. 신학적으로 고려파 영성은 Calvin의 개혁주의 신학과 일치하는 영성이며, Luther의 십자가의 신학에 기초한 십자가의 영성이다. 한국이라는 토양에서, 한국인의 신앙과 정서로, 순교적 신앙과 삶으로 꽃피웠다는 점에서 고려파 영성은 가장 한국적이면서 성경적인 영성으로서 초대교회와 종교개혁 시대의 영성을 잇는 한국판 개혁주의 영성이라 할 수 있다. 이 점에서 고려파 영성은 하나님이 한국교회에 주신 선물이요, 한국교회는 물론 세계교회가 공유해야 할 고귀한 영적 유산이다. 특별히 영성과 신학의 분리, ‘영광의 신학’으로 인해 바른 신앙과 교회의 정체성을 상실한 채 급격한 쇠퇴기에 들어선 이 시대에 고려파 영성은 한국교회가 나아갈 미래의 방향을 제시한다. 그러므로 그 동안 간과해 왔던 고려파 영성이 오늘날 한국교회에 시급히 재발견되고 회복되어야 한다.
