For a long time Christina Rossetti has been known for her religious poems and personal lyrics. Much has been known about her externally quiet nunlike life, but not much has been known about her inner struggles and loneliness as a woman of the conventional Victorian society. She was aware of the difficulties and limitations women faced in their thoughts and social life. She witnessed the hardships of the poor, underprivileged women as she worked at a reformatory for depraved women and orphans. She was victimized in some ways by the constraints of the patriarchal society. As a poet, she was sacrificed to the expectant talents of her brother Dante Gabriel, and, as a woman, to her devout mother`s religious doctrine. It was quite natural that she felt women`s need to help each other. She has written poems about "sisterhood" focusing on "sisterly love." One that stands out among these is "Goblin Market" written when she was only 18, and which helped her to be "an established writer." The poem, unlike its apparently simple design and rhythmic diction, renders difficulty in its thematic intentions. Obvious themes might be a warning against temptation or rescuing of a sister by another from danger. A more careful look at the poem reveals that it contains fairly complex design necessitating a more revolutionary reading. The poem testifies to various hidden desires and frustrations of a sensitive poet whose complex mind has found ways of expression through the creation of a poem. By creating two contrasting characters who represent her separate desires and by revealing similarities between the monstrous goblin men and the temptations of both inner mind and outer world, Christina indirectly expresses her humane aspect caged in a restricted society.
