This study aims to articulate the equality ideology of Sochun Kim Gi-Jeon, who was a representative thinker of Donghak Cheondoism in the modern enlightenment era of Korea, centering on the juvenile liberation movement. So far, the existing literature has only focused on his culture movement such as the women liberation movement or educational aspects in his achievements. However, with this narrow scope, there is a limitation to fully grasp the in-depth theoretical aspects of Kim Gi-Jeon. Therefore, this study is intended to identify ideological aspects of Kim Gi-Jeon, focusing on his ideology of equality. This study has discussed Kim Gi-Jeon’s understanding on Dong-hak. It has also analyzed Suun Choi Jeu’s Sicheonju as well as Haewol Choi Si-hyeong’s Sainyeocheon and his attitude towards children from the perspective of the ideology of equality. Furthermore, this article has focused on Kim Gi-Jeon’s juvenile liberation movement by introducing his media activities, acceptance of western ideologies and the enlightenment activities such as children and women liberation movements. It became obvious that his juvenile liberation movement was an exemplary case that reflected the equality ideology of Dong-hak in personal, ethical and economical aspects. Lastly, the characteristics of Kim Gi-Jeon’s equality ideology were examined. Through this study, it was confirmed that Sochun Kim Gi-Jeon’s enlightenment activities, including the juvenile liberation movement, was based on the ideology of equality. Moreover, it was noteworthy that in his equality ideology the causes of and solutions to inequality were investigated based not only on humane ethical but also socio-economic aspects. I hope that this study will provide a theoretical basis for exploring activities of intellectuals in the modern enlightenment era.

이 연구의 목적은 근대 계몽기 동학 천도교의 대표적인 사상가였던 소춘 김기전의 평등사상을 소년해방운동을 중심으로 규명하는데 있다. 그동안 김기전 연구는 주로 어린이 운동과 여성 운동을 비롯한 문화운동이나 교육적 측면을 중심으로 이루어져 김기전의 깊은 사상적 면모를 이해하는 데 한계가 있었다. 본 연구는 김기전의 평등사상을 중심으로 하여 그의 사상적 면모를 밝히는 데 중점을 두었다. 본 연구의 내용은 다음과 같다. 먼저 김기전의 동학이해가 어떤 것인지 논의하였다. 수운 최제우의 시천주, 해월 최시형의 사인여천 및 어린이에 대한 태도 등을 평등사상의 관점에서 분석하였다. 김기전의 언론활동, 서구사상의 수용, 어린이 및 여성운동 등의 계몽활동을 개괄하면서 소년해방운동의 면모를 제시하였다. 특히 그의 소년해방운동은 인격적 측면, 윤리적 측면, 경제적 측면에서 동학의 평등사상을 엿볼 수 있는 사례임을 밝혔다. 마지막으로 김기전의 평등사상의 특징이 무엇인지 규명하였다. 이 연구를 통해서 소춘 김기전의 소년해방운동을 비롯한 계몽활동은 평등사상에 근거하고 있음을 밝혔다. 특히 그의 평등사상에는 인간적 윤리적 차원뿐만 아니라 사회경제적 차원에서의 불평등의 원인과 해결책이 모색되었다는 점을 지적하였다. 이 연구는 근대계몽기 지식인의 활동을 연구하는 데 사상적 토대를 제공할 것으로 기대한다.
