This study aims to shed light on the nature and goal of the community pursued by Shin Dongyup, by figuring out the characteristics of the community shown in Donghak(東學) peasant revolution and the feature of the movement itself which are shown in his epic Geumkang (river). Shin Dongyup provides imagery of Donghak Peasant Revolution and its communities through Geumgang . Based on this, this study classified them into the Donghak community, peasant community, ethnic community, and human community. The followings are the contents of the study. First, Shin Dongyup provides imagery of Donghak community based on the idea of Donghak and suggested new ideal society through the peasant communities in his epic Geumgang . Internally he tried to restore the ethnic communities through a new social system by breaking down the feudal order based on Donghak’s ‘Sainyeocheon’(事人如天, humanitarianism in Donghak, meaning ‘respect humans like heaven’), and externally he tried to restore national independence and autonomy by driving out the foreign power based on Donghak doctrine ’Cheokyangcheokwae(external resistance, meaning ‘to resist Western countries and Japan’). Second, he pursued the human community and he crystallized the shape of an equal society without any privileged class, a society like a anarchic village, a primitive community that can be achieved by rejecting anti-life, anti-human materialism, and an ideal society of Donghak. Third, he wanted us to pursue the human community by ourselves, which is a world of recurrence(歸數性, the heart of a seed returning to the earth after the fruit ripens) that can be achieved by moving toward the world of life community. The properties of community in Geumgang suggested in this study was consistent with the properties of inherent community of Donghak. Therefore, this study is examining the forms of ideal communities which Donghak aimed at, and furthermore this study looks forward to elicit an additional discussion clarifying how the ideal of Donghak community is related to the ideal of modern society’s community.

이 연구의 목적은『 금강』에 나타난 동학농민운동 공동체의 특성과 동학농민운동의 성격을 규명함으로써 신동엽이 서사시『 금강』에서 추구하고자 한 공동체의 지향점을 고찰하는 것이다. 신동엽은『 금강』에 동학농민운동과 그 공동체를 시로 형상화한다. 이에 본고는 동학공동체, 농민공동체, 민족공동체, 인류공동체로 그 각각을 살폈다. 이 연구의 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 신동엽은 서사시『 금강』에서 동학이념을 사상적 기초로 하여 동학공동체를 시로 형상화하고 농민공동체를 통해 새로운 이상사회를 제시했다. 안으로는 동학의 사인여천(事人女天)을 근간으로 봉건적 질서를 타파하고 새로운 사회체제를 통해 민족공동체를 회복하고자 하였으며, 밖으로는 척양척왜(외부적 저항)의 동학 강령을 통해 외세를 몰아냄으로써 민족의 자주성과 주체성을 회복하고자 했다. 둘째, 그는 인류 공동체를 추구하고 특권층이 없는 평등한 사회, 무정부 마을과 같은 사회, 반생명적·반인격적 물질주의를 배격할 때 이룩될 수 있는 원시 공동체사회, 동학의 이상사회를 구체화해 보여주었다. 셋째, 그는 우리가 이러한 생명공동체의 세계를 지향할 때 이룩될 수 있는 귀수성의 세계인 인류 공동체를 우리 스스로가 추구하기를 바랬다. 연구에서 제시한『 금강』의 공동체적 속성은 동학에 내재된 공동체의 속성과도 부합했다. 따라서 본고는 동학이 지향한 이상적 공동체의 모습을 규명하고, 더 나아가 근대사회의 공동체적 이상과 동학의 공동체적 이상이 어떻게 연관되어 있는가를 밝히는 추가적인 논의를 이끌어 낼 수 있을 것으로 기대해 본다.
