The purpose of this study suggest effective ways of improving the subject management council by analyzing the operational cases, effects, and problems of the subject management council which was operated to improve the quality of liberal arts courses at Chonnam National University(CNU). This study analyzed the case of subject management council through the annual report of the institute of liberal education at CNU. Also, this study conducted focus group interviews and one-on-one in-depth interviews with the professors who taught liberal arts, and analyzed contents of interviews through the Nvivo 10 program. The result of this study, we was confirmed that CNU operates the subject management council in the form of subject management committee, meeting with the area of liberal arts, and the workshop around core liberal arts since 2010. Although faculty members perceived that these were helpful to share the know-how on the management of subject, they pointed out the problems such as troublesome of the administrative procedure and the similarity and repetition of the contents of discussion. We suggested the ways of improving the subject management council that suggesting the contents of discussion by the agency, establishing a support system to alleviate the administrative burden, and surveying the recognition of professors. This study will be helpful to faculty and staff who are concerned with the managing quality of liberal arts courses through suggesting specific the operational cases, effects, problems, and improvement ways of the subject management council

이 연구는 전남대에서 교양교과목의 질 제고를 위해 운영하였던 과목운영협의체의 운영 사례와 효과, 문제점 등을 분석함으로써 과목운영협의체의 효과적인 개선 방안을 제시하는 것이 목적이다. 이를 위해 전남대 기초교육원 연차보고서 등을 통해 과목운영협의체 운영 사례를 분석했다. 또한 담당교수를 대상으로 한 그룹 인터뷰와 일대일 심층 인터뷰를 실시하였으며, Nvivo 10 프로그램을 이용하여 인터뷰 내용을 분석했다. 연구 결과, 전남대는 2010년부터 핵심교양 교과목을 중심으로 과목운영위원회, 영역별 간담회, 워크숍 등의 형태로 과목운영협의체를 운영하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 과목운영협의체에 대해 참여교수들은 과목 운영에 관한 노하우를 공유하는 점에서 도움이 된다고 인식하였으나, 행정적인 절차의 번거로움과 논의 내용의 유사성 및 반복을 문제점으로 지적했다. 이에 연구진은 과목운영협의체의 개선 방안으로 주관 기관에서의 논의 내용 제안, 행정적 부담 완화를 위한 지원 체계 구축, 정기적인 담당교수 인식 조사 등을 제시해 보았다. 이 연구는 특정 대학에서의 교양교과목 질 관리를 위한 구체적인 과목운영협의체 운영 사례를 소개하고, 효과와 문제점, 개선 방안 등을 제시함으로써 교양교과목 질 관리 방안을 고민하는 대학 실무자들에게 구체적인 도움이 될 것이라는 점에서 의의가 있으리라 본다.
