The purpose of this study was to clarify the historical origin and meaning of Cheongryangri’s current market sphere based on the background and development of Cheongryangri market after the liberation of Korea. It particularly focused on the regional circumstances that demanded a market and the activities and purpose of the cooperative that led the establishment of market. For this purpose, this study analyzed the 『Cheongryangri Market Resources』 gathered in 2013 by Seoul Museum of History and discovered the following facts: First, as a result of reviewing the local community’s demand for a market under the Japanese imperial rule and Gyeongseong-bu’s response to arrange the commercial lots found in the Cheongryangri Land Zoning Project, it was found that there already was a big frame related to the development of a market under the Japanese imperial rule. In other words, the significance of Cheongryangri Market can be understood by considering the local circumstances not only after the liberation but also during the Japanese imperial rule. Second, it examined the organization of market cooperative that led the establishment of Cheongryangri market after the liberation and the participating personnel, along with their justification for the market and the general activities for its establishment. What was interesting was that the Cheongryangri Market Cooperative originally wanted to acquire the land owned by The New Korea Company, but had to purchase a commercial lot because the Military Government Office had ordered them to build a permanent market. The organization converted from a cooperative into a corporation to promptly process capital procurement to purchase a land and execute the construction work. The establishment of Cheongryangri Market can be understood as an outcome of the local community’s demand for a market and the Military Government Office’s intention to develop the lands around the city owned by The New Korea Company. It is hoped that this study on Cheongryangri Market could suggest examples of meaningful shift in space that occurred while Gyeongseong was converted into Seoul after the liberation of Korea and future studies should clarify the circumstances of Cheongryangri area and its relationship with the surrounding commercial spaces after the Korean War.

본 연구는 해방 후 청량리시장의 설립 배경과 과정을 통해 현재 청량리 시장상 권의 역사적 기원과 의미를 밝히는 데 목적이 있다. 특히 시장을 필요로 했던 지 역적 상황과 시장설립의 주체였던 조합의 활동과 목적에 주목했다. 이를 위해서 2013년 서울역사박물관에서 수집한 『청량리시장 자료』를 분석했고, 그 결과 다음 과 같은 사실들을 발견하였다. 첫째, 일제강점기 청량리 일대 지역사회의 시장설립 요구와 경성부의 청량리 토지구획정리사업에 나타난 시장용지 배치 등 관 측의 대응을 검토한 결과 이미 일제강점기 당시 시장설립과 관련한 큰 틀이 마련되어 있었다. 결국 청량리시장 의 설립은 해방 이후의 상황 뿐만 아니라 앞선 일제강점기까지 염두에 두어야 그 의미를 이해할 수 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 둘째, 해방 이후 청량리시장 설 립을 주도했던 시장조합의 조직 경위와 참여 인사를 정리하고, 이들이 내세운 시 장 설립의 명분과 시장설립을 위한 제반 활동을 검토했다. 이 과정에서 흥미로운 점은 애초 청량리시장조합은 신한공사가 소유하고 있던 부지를 임대하여 시장을 설립하고자 했지만, 시장의 영구적 건설을 목표로 하라는 군정청 관재처의 명령 에 따라서 시장용지의 매입에 나서게 됐다는 것이다. 이에 따라서 부지 매입자금 확보 및 공사 진행 등을 조속히 처리하기 위해서 조합에서 주식회사 형태로 조직 을 일신하게 됐다. 청량리시장의 설립은 시장에 대한 지역사회의 요구와 신한공사가 보유했던 도시 인근의 택 지개발을 목표로 했던 군정청의 의도가 결부된 결 과물로 이해할 수 있다. 청량리시장에 대한 본 연구가 일제강점기 경성이 해방 후 서울로 전환되는 과 정에서 발생한 공간 변화의 의미를 찾을 수 있는 사례를 제시해 줄 있기를 기대 하면서, 한국전쟁 이후 청량리 일대의 상황과 시장을 중심으로 하는 상업공간의 관계를 밝히는 것이 차후 연구과제라 할 수 있을 것이다.
