Although most of known examples of wooden built heritages in South Korea have seem to secure its structural durabilities over long periods of survival, at the same time built heritages gain undesirable consequences of either natural or artificial decay and environmental change, all of which contribute to structurally unstable conditions through a number of effects. For this particular concern, National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage conducts structural monitoring under the lists of architectural heritages which need important care. Since Korea is not an earthquake-safe zone anymore, preparation of architectural heritage about earthquake is urgently needed. The Earthquake on September, 2016 remarks the importance of monitoring-based research projects among built heritages over earthquake zones and dangerous locations with other occured natural disasters. In the close connection with the ‘Gyeongju Earthquake(9.12 Earthquake)’, this research searches two directions from an analysis for comparisons of monitoring results between the past and the current conditions of built heritages in Gyeongju and a suggestion for future research subjects in the field of earthquake- related disaster preparation.

문화재는 오랜 기간 경과하면서 자체적으로 안정성을 확보한 상태이나 긴 존치기간으로 인해 자연적․ 인위적으로 재료의 노후화, 주변 환경에 의한 변화에 의해 구조적으로 불안정하거나 불안정 요소를 내 포하고 있다. 특별관리가 필요한 문화재는 정기적으로 모니터링을 실시하고 있다. 2016년 9월 발생한 지 진으로 경주지역 문화재에 피해가 발생하였다. 한반도 역시 지진으로부터 안전지대라 할 수 없으므로 문화재도 지진에 의한 재난에 대비하여야 한다. 본 연구는 9.12지진 발생 전후의 경주지역 건축문화재 모니터링 결과를 비교․분석하여 지진 피해 실태를 확인하고 이와 관련하여 지진 등의 자연재난으로부터 문화재를 보호하는 방안에 대해 고찰해보고자 한다.
