This paper analyzes sixty-six questions that appeared in a subject test of the civil service examination, “Questioning on the Four Books” (Saseoui 四書疑), during the reign of King Jeongjo. Test questions that appeared during his reign are also found in Gyeongoe jerok(『京外題錄』) and Sama bangmok(『司馬榜目』), as well as in surviving scrolls of the exam papers, with some various styles of inclusion. The test questions were similarly structured regardless of their variety and included subjective questions on: existing narratives to define a character or terminology; the chronology and the status of a term; the logics between two sentences; and a theory’s correspondence with or divergence from the reality. Sometimes the questions demanded no subjective answer but simple elaboration of definitions of a word or meaning of a phrase, showing little difference from another test subject, “Meanings of Five Classics” (Ogyeongui 五經義). For another test subject, “Written Countermeasures” (Daechaekmun 對策文), a brief analysis of “Countermeasures from the Classics” (gyeongchaek 經策) was conducted in comparison to King Jeongjo’s writings, namely “Gyeongsa gangui (經史講義)” in Hongjae jeonseo (『弘齋全書』), and Eoje jomun(御製條問). Although the excerpts were similarly structured in all three texts, their contents varied depending on the publication purpose and the target reader. Overall, the Saseoui section appears to be designed to induce examinees to comprehend the classical texts in a comprehensive scope rather than sticking to words, by grasping the main context throughout the book and acquiring comprehensive knowledge on historical backgrounds, anecdotes and factual evidences related to the articles. Further analyses should be conducted on the questions and answers for civil service examinations during the entire Joseon period.

본 논문은 정조대에 시행된 과거 시험 문제 가운데 사서의(四書疑) 과목으로 출제된 66제(題)에 대한 연구이다. 정조대의 사서의 시제는 『경외제록(京外題錄)』과 『사마방목(司馬榜目)』, 당대의 시권(試卷)을 통해 볼 수 있었으며, 수록의 방식에는 약간의 차이가 있었다. 사서의 시제는 비슷한 체제를 갖추고 있었는데, 그 내용은 자의(字意) 및 개념어(槪念語)의 서술에 관한 의(疑), 개념어의 선후고하(先后高下)에 관한 의(疑), 문장 간의 논리에 관한 의(疑), 이치와 실제의 동이(同異)에 관한 의(疑) 등으로 다양하였다. 특별한 의(疑)를 담고 있지 않고 특정 구절에 대한 경의(經義)를 설명하라는 시제 또한 있었는데, 이는 오경의(五經義)와 크게 다르지 않았다. 나아가 대책문 가운데 경의를 묻는 경책(經策) 및 『홍재전서』의 경사강의(經史講義) 어제조문(御製條問)과 체제 및 내용을 간략히 비교해보았는데, 전체적인 체제는 유사하였으나 그 목적과 대상의 차이로 인하여 내용상에는 차이점이 있었다. 사서의 시험은 경문의 전체적인 요지를 꿰뚫는 이치를 파악하고, 경문이 서술된 전후의 맥락과 당대 환경 및 실제 고사와 사실 등을 두루 섭렵해서 학자들이 경문 내면에 갇히지 말고 보다 넓은 시각으로 경서를 이해하도록 하는데 그 목적이 있었던 듯하다. 앞으로 조선 전(全)시기의 시제 고찰 및 제문(製文)에 관한 연구가 함께 이루어져야 할 것이다.
