This essay tries to examine how Kim, Jongjik[金宗直] who emphasized moral practice of Confucianism through the Elementary Learning[小學] concretely suggested the basis of Neo-Confucianism for the study of Chinese classics for the purpose of practice of it. Further aim of this essay is to propose how administration theory based on his study of Confucian classics is composed with consistency. Among these critical minds especially writer gives attention to the fact how Neo-Confucian factor and practical Confucian element are duplicated in Kim, Jongjik's thought of the study of Chinese classics. On the Kim, Jongjik's attitude of the study of Chinese classics oriented Neo-Confucianism, emphasis of the Great Ultimate[太極] as the core concept of Neo-Confucianism, understanding of the Book of Changes[周易], and valuation of the cultivation of human nature and mind is contained. While alerting that one is tempted to sensuous desire, he emphasized Neo-Confucian cultivation focused reverence and self-cultivation and reflective consciousness[存養省察] underlining Confucius' four prohibition of seeing, hearing, speaking, and behavior, mind conservation[存心] and seeking for the lost mind of Mencius as standard of self-discipline. In case of Kim, Jongjik, the Elementary Learning has the meaning as the basis book through which one cultivates the origin of mind. And it is the work which aims at national social realization of Five Relationships[五倫] in Confucianism alongside suggestion of normative standard for practice. In brief, Kim, Jongjik's thought of the study of Chinese classics be richly tinged with the self-cultivational color of Neo-Confucianism oriented cultivation of mind. Whereas in the administration theory he suggested appointment of wise and competent people, acquisition and edification of filial piety and brotherly love together with loyalty and sincerity, communication between sovereign and subject through remonstrance, and strict monitoring of local political affairs etc. as Confucian standard for ideal governance. Look at it this way, on the one hand Kim, Jongjik's study is founded on Confucian scriptures and the Neo-Confucian study of Chinese classics, on the other his learning is that moral practice centered the Elementary Learning and administration theory for political enlightenment constitute the consistent system.

본 논문에서는 『소학』을 통한 유학의 도덕적 실천적 측면을 강조했던 김종직이 이를 실천하기 위하여 성리학적 측면에서의 경학사상적 근거를 구체적으로 어떻게 제시하고 있는가를 살펴보고자 하였다. 본고에서는 그의 경학사상에 기초한 경세론이 어떻게 일관성 있게 관철되고 있는가 하는 점에 주목하였다. 이러한 문제의식 가운데 특히 김종직의 경학사상에 성리학적 요소와 실천 유학적 요소가 어떻게 중첩되어 있는가 하는 점에 유의하고자 하였다. 김종직의 성리학을 중심으로 하는 경학적 태도는 성리학의 중심 개념으로 태극과 리를 강조하거나, 우주론적 변화법칙을 포함하고 있는 『주역』에 주목하거나, 본성과 마음의 수양을 중시하는 부분에서 드러나고 있다. 그는 인심이 유희와 온갖 감각적인 욕망에 이끌리는 것을 경계하면서 공자가 말한 시청언동의 사물(四勿)과 맹자의 마음을 보존함, 방기한 마음을 찾음[求放心]을 수양의 기준으로 강조하면서, 경(敬)과 존양성찰(存養省察)을 중심으로 하는 성리학적 수양을 강조하였다. 김종직에 있어서 『소학』은 성리학에서 중시하는 마음의 본원을 함양하는 기본서로서의 의미가 강조되면서도, 실천을 위한 규범적 표준 제시와 함께 오륜의 국가 사회적 실현을 목표로 하는 저술이라는 의미가 있다. 그의 경학적 인식에는 마음의 함양을 중심으로 하는 성리학의 수양론적 색채가 짙게 포함되어 있다. 이렇게 볼 때, 김종직의 학문은 유가 경전과 성리학적 경학에 근거를 두고 있으면서도, 이를 『소학』을 중심으로 하는 도덕적 실천과 정치적 교화를 목표로 하는 경세론을 일관된 체계로 이루어져 있다고 할 수 있다.
