This paper traces the places of abode, routes of relocation, and areas of relocation of Roman Catholics in Jinsan County(Geumsan County) from 1791 to 1880. The places of abode of devotees in Jinsan County were concentrated in certain areas. For personal safety and religious life, Catholic communities came to be established in Jinsan Township and Boksu Township within Jinsan County, especially mountainous areas bordering on Daejeon City and Beolgok Township in Nonsan City. Likewise, believers came to live in Nami Township and Namil Township within Geumsan County, both close to Wanju County and Jinan County. Located under such site conditions, Catholic communities in Jinsan County naturally engaged in exchange with those in other areas or saw the frequent relocation of devotees. In particular, there were many cases of relocation during periods when the spaces of their daily lives were destroyed due to persecutions or there was a danger of being arrested. When the routes of relocation of believers from Jinsan County are examined, devotees relocated mainly to Jinsan County from the Naepo area in Chungcheong Province and Yeonsan Township and Eunjin Township (both in Nonsan City) nearby. This reflects the fact that, from the early days of Catholicism in Korea, numerous believers lived in the Naepo area and relocated to other areas to avoid persecutions. Even devotees in the distant Gyeongsang Province, too, seem to have viewed Jinsan County as an appropriate place of abode and decided to move there. When relocating from Jinsan County to other areas, together with neighboring areas (Yeonsan Township, Jinjam County, and Gosan Township), remoter Gongju City, Seocheon County/Nampo County, and Gwangju City likewise became candidates for relocation. Female devotees moved to other areas through marriage, and believers in Jinsan County were linked to their peers in Gosan Township and Gongju City through marriage alliances. Amidst continued hardships including the Korean government’s persecutions of Catholics in 1801, 1827, 1839, and 1866 following 1791, devotees in Jinsan County established mission stations (gongso) in Gasaebeol, Munbau, and Jinbatdeul Villages while forging their lives. Such Catholic communities in Jinsan County came to take root in local communities in earnest after the Joseon Dynasty’s (1392-1910) opening of its doors to the world in 1876.

이 글은 1791년부터 1880년까지 진산(금산) 천주교 신자의 거주지와 이동 경로, 이동 지역을 정리한 것이다. 진산(금산) 지역 천주교 신자들의 거주지는 일부 지역에 집중해 있었다. 신변 안전과 신앙생활을 위해 진산 지역에서는 진산면과 복수면, 특히 대전이나 논산 벌곡면 지역과 경계를 이루는 산골 지역에 신앙공동체가 자리 잡게 되었고, 금산 지역에서도 완주군이나 진안군에 가까운 남이면과 남일면 지역에 신자가 거주하게 된 것이다. 이러한 입지 조건에 자리 잡은 진산(금산) 지역 신앙공동체는 자연스럽게 다른 지역의 신앙공동체와 교류하거나 신자들의 이주가 잦았다. 특히 박해로 생활 터전이 파괴되거나 체포의 위험이 도사리고 있던 시기에는 이주하는 경우가 많았다. 진산(금산) 출신 신자들의 이주 경로를 살펴보면, 충청도의 내포 지역과 인근의 연산‧은진[현재 논산] 지역에서 주로 진산(금산) 지역으로 이주했던 것을 알 수 있다. 이는 충청도(내포) 지역이 한국천주교 초창기부터 많은 신자들이 거주했고 박해를 피해 다른 지역으로 이주한 경우가 많았다는 사실을 반영하는 것이다. 멀리 떨어진 경상도 지역 신자도 진산 지역이 거주지로 적합하다고 판단하고 이주를 결심했던 것으로 보인다. 진산(금산) 지역에서 다른 지역으로 이주할 경우에는 인접 지역[연산, 진잠, 고산]과 함께 좀 더 거리가 먼 공주, 서천‧남포, 광주 지역도 이주 대상지가 되었다. 여성 신자들은 결혼을 통해 타지로 이주했는데, 진산(금산) 지역 신자들은 고산, 공주 지역 신자들과 혼인 관계를 맺고 있었다. 1791년 진산사건 이후 1801년, 1827년, 1839년, 1866년 박해 등 계속된 시련 속에서도 진산(금산) 지역 신자들은 삶의 터전을 일구면서 가새벌, 문바우, 진밭들 공소를 세웠다. 이러한 진산(금산) 지역 신앙공동체는 개항기 이후 본격적으로 지역사회에 뿌리를 내리게 되었다.
