Today, due to the astonishing advances in science and technology and the corresponding expansion of human knowledge, a true unity of mankind is rapidly becoming a reality. However, because of the historical, regional differences in philosophy, religion, ideology, and interest, it is also likely that the world will experience much conflict and confusion in the process of becoming one. Now, as we enter the New Millennium China will have to meet the challenge of a global culture that is increasingly becoming one. In this process, it cannot avoid an encounter with Christianity. During the past 2000 years, Christian thought has been the spiritual foundation on which the Western civilization has been built. On the other hand, by undergoing a process of indigenization through its encounter with Chinese thought, Christianity needs to absorb all the nutrients that the rich soil of Chinese civilization has to offer. Through mutual understanding and cooperation Christianity and the Chinese civilization can contribute to the formation of a unified Asia and a unified mankind. As we embark on the process of effecting a unity of all mankind, Christian philosophy, Chinese culture, and all other religions and cultures of Asia have to take as their starting point the most basic point on which all can agree. In other words, we need to start our conversation from something that all people, individuals, religions can accept as being the most fundamental and common. Then we should try to build on that point so as to build a common culture for all mankind. This common point, I think, is none other than love of life. Therefore, in this thesis, the author studies the essential element of the philosophy of life in Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism, Shamanism and Thomas Aquinas and tries to create a new common culture of mankind based on love.

지금 인류 역사는 자연과학과 기술의 놀라운 발전과 그것에 상응한 인지(人智)의 발전으로 하나의 인류 형성을 급속하게 진행하고 있다. 이 과정에서 인류는 그 역사적, 지역적 배경과 사상, 종교, 이념, 이해관계 등으로 많은 갈등과 혼란을 겪을 것으로 예상된다. 이런 발전 과정에서 아시아는 인류의 가장 깊은 철학들과 종교들의 발상지이기 때문에 적어도 앞으로 몇 세기 동안 매우 중요한 역할을 해야 할 것이다. 사실 하나의 아시아 없이 하나의 인류가 형성되지 못할 것이다. 이제 새롭게 전개되는 새 천년대에 중국은 하나를 지향하는 인류의 사상과 특히 그리스도교 문화와 만나지 않을 수 없게 되었다. 그리스도교 사상은 지난 2천 년 동안 서방 세계 문화를 형성하는 데 있어 정신적 기초였다. 또 한편 그리스도교 사상, 특히 그리스도교 철학은 중국의 사상과 만남으로써 이른바 토착화의 과정을 통해 더 풍요로운 자양분을 취해야 할 것이다. 그리스도교 사상과 중국의 문화는 상호 이해와 협조로써 하나의 아시아와 하나의 인류를 형성하는 데 기여해야 할 것이다. 앞으로 하나인 인류를 건설함에 있어 그리스도교 철학과 중국 문화, 더 나아가 아시아의 모든 종교 문화는 인류의 가장 근본적 공통점에서 새로 출발함이 좋을 것이다. 다시 말해 어떤 민족이나 개인, 종교도 다 받아들이고 협력할 수 있는 근본 요인에서 대화하고 그런 것의 증진을 위해 상호 협력할 수 있는 공통점에서 인류의 공통 문화를 새롭게 형성해야 할 것으로 생각한다. 그것은 다름 아닌 생명 사랑의 문화이겠다. 그러므로, 필자는 이 논문에서 도교의 생명관, 유교의 생명관, 불교의 생명관, 무속의 생명관과 토마스 아퀴나스의 생명관의 핵심적 요인을 탐구하며 사랑에 바탕을 둔 인류의 공통 문화 창출을 시도한다.
