‘Democracy’ learning of ‘Post-war’ Women and ‘Post-Surrender’ Men ─ Focused on Shishi Bunroku’s School of Freedom ─
This study、analyzed School of Freedom(1951), focusing on the American Occupation of Japan as the start of the post-war Japan and a learning period of democracy, as part of studies on society and representations of the age. Shishi Bunroku’s School of Freedom is a text which sophisticatedly describes how Japanese mental states of “surrender” and “the Allied occupation” interact with gender in the everyday context. When School of Freedom was being published, the word ‘gender equality’ stood for the ‘postwar’ society. However, the women in the novel were not depicted as ‘independent’ self-identities or ‘subjects’ of change despite their role as ‘a proponent of new values.’ Furthermore, conservative husbands are perplexed with changes in women`s attitudes which contrasted to the pre-war period, and intimidated with the ‘post-war democracy,’ yet the husbands reveal the attitude disregarding the democracy as a transitory tide rather than recognizing it as a novel principle. School of Freedom affirms that the experience of a war and mental states of the occupied affects both women and men during the American Occupation through limits of women`s advancement of their rights and men`s sardonic reaction toward democracy. This article reflected from a gender perspective the fact that a retrospective atmosphere in the 1950s, represented as the Reverse Course, leads to the conservative ending of the novel and pursuit for identity.
