This study established a systematic procedure for in-plant logistics innovation using design thinking methodology and applied it to a special steel company. The procedure is composed of four stepwise and iterative stages: (1) identification of the problem (Discovery), (2) finding the root cause (Inspiration), (3) generating ideas for the alternatives (Ideation), and (4) selecting the most appropriate alternative (Experimentation). We relied on not only the logical reasoning based on the historical data but also the abductive reasoning to find out the new rules based on the experience. The case company is currently under investment to improve the material flow according to the result from this study and is expected to be able to gather the real time location information to enhance the efficiency of in-plant logistics, and finally the real time process control will be possible through the MES building. This study discusses the distinctive characteristics of design thinking based on the case of in-plant logistics innovation using design thinking methodology, and suggests theoretical and practical implications as well as future research directions.

이 연구에서는 design thinking 방법론을 이용하여 공장 내 물류혁신에 관한 체계적인 절차를 수립하고 사례공장에 적용하였다. Design thinking을 이용한 물류개선은 문제의 도출(Discovery), 근본원인의 발견(Inspiration), 대안 발굴을 위한 아이디어 도출(Ideation), 그리고 실험(Experimentation)을 통한 대안확정의 단계적 및 반복적 과정으로 이루어졌으며, 과거의 자료에만 의존하는 것이 아니라 경험규칙으로부터 새로운 안을 찾아내는 귀추법(abduction)을 적용함으로써 혁신적인 안의 도출이 가능하였다. 사례기업에서는 현재 제시된 물류혁신안에 의한 투자가 진행되고 있으며, 향후 실시간 위치정보관리가 가능하게 되고, 결과적으로 MES가 구축되어 실시간 공정관리를 통해 효율성이 향상될 것으로 기대된다. 이 연구는 공장내 물류혁신에 design thinking을 적용한 사례를 바탕으로 design thinking 방법론이 갖는 차별적 특징에 논의하였으며, 또한 실무적․이론적 시사점과 향후 연구방향을 제시하였다.
