Ahn Do-Weol was regarded as the representative of Modern Buddhism in Jeju since 1910. His activities was the summation of modern buddhist movements in Jeju during Japanese colonial era from 1910's to 1930's. He engaged in beginning of Modern Buddhism in Jeju as well as taking a series of actions against suppression of the Japanese colonial authorities for securing autonomous rights of religious activities. Ahn Do-Weol devoted himself to autonomous movements of Buddhism in Jeju against Japanese colonial rule. According to anti-Japanese history of Buddhism in Jeju, the competent authorities tightened the restrictions on religious activities by buddhists including the establishment of buddhist temples. Such restriction on Buddhism in Jeju lasted until 1924. In 1930, Ahn Do-Weol and Gwaneumsa Temple got the permission of propagation after participating in Buddhist Association in Jeju. It was the first time that person who was affiliated to buddhist group in Jeju. Since then, Ahn Do-Weol dedicated himself to securing autonomous rights of Buddhism in Jeju. He held the temporary rally of Buddhism in Jeju for establishing new propagational organization. Such activities were carried out under the intention of taking the initiative of buddhist activities in Jeju. Consequently, buddhist movements including establishment of temples were flourished by the 1930's in Jeju.

안도월을 주목하면 근대 제주불교의 활동을 집약적으로 살펴볼 수 있다. 안도월은 1910년 이후 근대 제주불교의 중심인물로 제주불교 활동을 주도하였던 인물이기 때문이다. 안도월의 제주불교 활동을 따라가 보면 제주 법정사 항일운동 이후 일제가 제주불교를 어떻게 통제하였는지를 살필 수 있으며, 제주불교는 어떻게 일제의 통제로부터 벗어나 활동을 할 수 있었는지를 볼 수 있다. 안도월의 활동은 1910년대 근대 제주불교의 태동에서부터 시작하여 1920년대의 일제의 제주불교 통제 상황에서의 활동, 1930년대 제주불교의 활동까지 제주불교 활동의 중심이었다. 안도월은 근대제주불교의 중심인물이다. 1910년대 제주불교의 항일 이력은 제주불교 활동 통제라는 결과를 초래하였고 1924년까지 사찰 설치를 비롯한 여타 불교활동이 이루어지지 않고 있었다. 안도월과 관음사가 제주불교협회 활동에 적극 참여하는 등의 노력 끝에 1930년에 제주불교 인물로는 처음으로 안도월이 관음사 포교담임자로 허가 된다. 이후 안도월은 제주불교 임시대회를 개최하여 제주불교를 이끌 새로운 기구의 설립을 통해 포교하겠다는 의도로 제주불교계에 의지한 토착세력 중심의 활동을 위해 노력하였다.
