Modern Korean history was distorted by the invasion of Japanese Imperialism. The distortion was occured in the various fields, including Buddhist history. The life of Bongam(峰庵) Byeon wolju(邊月周: 1909∼1975) was also distorted. In his youth, He became a professor at Masan University with the status of Buddhist monk. But he had to go through the huge change along with the appearance of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism(韓國佛敎曹溪宗) in 1962. In this paper, Byeon Wolju’s Buddhist thought was analyzed and its meaning was depicted in this evaluation, based on the four points of view: First, it was examined from the viewpoint of the ‘Dharma realm(法界)’ thought. Second, it was examined from the viewpoint of ‘ignorance(無明)’ break-down. Third, it was examined from the viewpoint of ‘the dharma lineage of members of the Buddhist order(宗統). Finally, it was examined from the viewpoint of the movement of great vehicle buddhism. After reviewing his Buddhist thought based on these four points of view, I evaluated his thought and concluded that he tried to change contemporary thought during the course of Korean modern Buddhist history.

한국 근대사는 일본의 제국주의 침략으로 인해 뒤틀리는 굴절이 있었다. 그 굴절은 각 방면에 걸쳐 발생했는데, 불교의 역사도 그 중의 하나이다. 이런 굴절의 불교사 속에서, 봉암 변월주의 삶 또한 굴절되고 말았다. 그는 젊은 시절 일찍이 승려의 신분으로 마산대학의 교수가 되었지만, 1962년 ‘대한불교조계종’의 출현과 더불어 그의 인생은 큰 변화를 겪지 않을 수 없었다. 이 논문에서는 이런 근대시기를 살아갔던 변월주의 불교사상을 분석하고 그 의미를 평가적으로 서술한다. 네 측면에서 이런 작업을 수행했다. 첫째는 ‘법계(法界)’ 사상의 측면에서, 둘째는 ‘무명(無明)’의 타파 측면에서, 셋째는 ‘종통(宗統)’의 측면에서, 넷째는 ‘인재양성’의 측면에서 각각 검토하였다. 이런 검토 결과, 필자는 그의 사상은 근대 한국불교의 맥락 속에서 현대의 사상적 변화를 시도했다고 평가했다.
