The purpose of this study is analysis of Textbooks of enlightenment Korea, especially in Moral education, Korean language, and Korea history of elementary education. In the first years of this period, the elementary school act called the Little School Act became the basis for the modernization of elementary education. Subjects and their teachings were specified in this act and related ordinance. Regulations on the textbooks were under the department of education called Hookboo. Textbooks were usually adaptive translations from the foreign sources. In the second years, the elementary school act called Common School Act presided over the modernization of elementary education in Korea. Elementary education became under the control the Japan. Textbooks were under the control of Hakboo as in the first times; but in addition, textbooks used in the private schools also came under its control. As result of this study, elenemtary education in the enlightenment period of Korea had been significant and conflicts in any period of time. In this period, this monograph identifies two kinds of educational thought in the early civilization period in Korea: traditional and modern. In conclusion, elementary textbooks of the enlightenment period were wide differences between the first and the second period of that time such as in the ideology of education, educational curriculum, educational system etc.

본 연구는 한말 개화기 초등용 교과서 중에서 수신ㆍ윤리, 국어, 역사를 학부시기와 일제 통감부시기로 구분하여 교과내용의 차이를 분석하기 위한 연구이다. 한말 초등용 교과서는 을사보호조약을 기점으로 교과내용이 구분된다. 학부시기에는 소학교령에 따라 초등학교의 교육과정이 소학교령과 소학교령 교칙대강에 명시되어 있다. 당시 소학교 교육과정에 의거한 교과용 도서정책은 학부에서 관장하였다. 그러나 을사보호조약 이후 초등교육은 일본의 침략정책에 의해 보통학교령과 보통학교 시행규칙에 의해 명시되어 있다. 이 시기의 교과용 도서정책은 일제의 식민지 부합정책에 의해 엄격하게 규제된 것이 특징이다. 개화기의 초등교육을 통해 오늘날 초등교육의 발전 방향을 모색하는 데는 어려움이 따른다. 그러나 개화기 초등교육은 비록 그 이론과 실제에 있어서는 다소간의 차이를 보일지라도 초등교육에 대한 국민적 염원은 오늘날 초등교육에 시사하는 바가 크다. 본 연구에서는 학부와 통감부의 초등용 교과서 분석을 통해 개화기 초등교육의 실체를 파악하고자 하였다.
