This study tried to analyze empirically the effect of the R&D collaboration network in biotechnology research on patent performance in Korea using network analysis. The empirical study was based on the dataset from 1,897 BT research in the National R&D program in Korea for three consecutive years. The R&D collaboration performance model presented as the collaboration network structure and patent performance was analyzed through a network analysis and a negative binomial model. The R&D collaboration network structure was composed of three centralities that included degree, betweenness and closeness. The outcome variables was measured by the number of patent produced from the R&D collaboration. Empirical results shows that the degree centrality among three centrality measures for the structure of R&D collaboration influence the performance of patent positively. In addition, the closeness centrality also appear to have an effect on the output of patent. However, the effect of the betweenness centrality on the performance of patent appear to be not statistically significant.

바이오테크(BT) 분야는 경제성장을 견인할 차세대 성장동력으로 주목받고 있고, 최근 5년간 국가연구개발 투자에서 BT분야 연구에 대한 투자는 꾸준히 증가하고 있는데, 이에 반해 연구생산성은 아직 높지 않다. 지식집약적이고, 개발기간이 길며, 연구개발 비용이 많이 드는 BT연구는 다른 어떤 기술 분야보다 연구기관 간의 협력네트워크가 중요하다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 국가연구개발사업의 BT분야 협력연구에서 협력네트워크의 구조적 특성을 네트워크 분석을 통해 분석하고, 이러한 구조적 특성이 특허성과에 미치는 영향을 실증분석하고자 하였다. 본 연구에서는 최근 3년 동안 국가연구개발사업으로 수행된 BT 과제들 중에서 1개 이상의 연구기관과 협력을 통해 수행된 과제 총 1897건을 추출하여 실증분석에 사용하였다. 연구기관들의 협력 네트워크 특성 중 3대 중심성 지표를 분석하기 위해 Netminer 3.0 프로그램을 사용하여 네트워크 분석을 수행하였고, 협력네트워크의 중심성이 특허성과에 미치는 영향을 음이항회귀모형을 사용하여 검증하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, BT분야의 협력연구기관들의 연결정도중심성은 특허성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, BT분야의 협력연구기관들의 매개중심성은 특허성과에 부적인 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났지만, 통계적으로 유의하지는 않았다. 셋째, BT분야의 협력연구기관들의 근접중심성과 특허성과와의 관계는 그 영향력의 크기가 연결정도중심성보다는 작았지만, 정(+)의 관계가 있음이 확인되었다.
