In an educational service market in Korea, there is intense competition to attract students because of gradual opening and sharp decrease in the number of students. Lately, domestic colleges attempt or examine the introduction of Residential College(RC) to respond to this change of educational environment and offer differentiated education. The introduction of RC is to realize holistic education by passing the mold of existing dormitory giving only room and board, and living conditions with basic amenities to students, and promoting not only study but also voluntary service, increasing community sense, and various cultural experiences by connecting study and life of students. Therefore, to respond to a change of expected rapid educational environment in Korea in the future, the necessity to seek new change of curriculum by adopting RC System that is an educational system of developed prestigious universities actively grows bigger. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine a method to adopt RC to fit the reality of education in Korea by investigating developed RC that is an integrated alternative of education and dwelling, the real condition of RC expanded between domestic famous universities from 2013, so to suggest effective management scheme for RC in Korea.

우리나라 교육서비스 시장은 점진적인 개방과 학령인구의 급격한 감소로 학생 유치경쟁이 날로 치열해 지고 있다. 최근 국내대학들은 이러한 교육환경의 변화에 대응하고 차별화된 교육을 제공하기 위하여 기숙형 대학(Residential College, 이하 RC)의 도입을 시도하거나 검토하고 있다. RC 기숙사의 도입은 단순히 학생들에게 숙식과 기본적인 편의시설을 갖춘 주거환경만을 제공하던 기존 기숙사의 틀을 넘어 학생들의 학업과 생활을 연결하여 학업은 물론 봉사활동과 공동체 의식함양, 다양한 문화체험 등을 촉진함으로서 전인적인 교육을 실현하기 위함이다. 기숙형 대학(RC)이 새롭게 대두되는 교육환경에서 두드러진 변화는 글로벌 고등교육시장이 형성되면서 선진 명문대학의 신흥 교육시장의 진출, 국내대학의 해외 유학생 유치 등 교육의 국제화가 급속하게 이루어지고 있다는 것이다. 이처럼 국제화의 확대와 치열한 경쟁으로 인하여 대학의 생존이 위태로운 시점에서 우리나라 대학은 경쟁에서 살아남기 위한 방법을 모색해야 할 뿐 아니라, 수요자인 학생들에게 보다 개선된 교육서비스를 제공하기 위하여 기숙형 대학(RC) 시스템을 도입하여 새로운 변화를 시도하여야 한다. 이 논문에서는 현재까지 전문적인 연구가 부재한 기숙형 대학(Residential College)에 대한 기초연구로 RC의 정확한 개념 및 특성에 대한 이해와 국내․외 기숙형 대학의 사례연구를 통하여 효율적인 운영방안을 제시하여 우리나라 교육현실에 맞게 RC를 도입하는 방안을 제안하고자 한다.
