This paper aims at reviewing the interactions between time and space focusingon the case of Saemaul Undong in Korea and other developing countries. For this, theframework to identify time dimension and spatial context is reviewed first, and will beapplied to those experiences of Saemaul Undong. The framework applied in this paperis basically based on time geography and diffusion theories developed in the academiccircles already. Diffusion theories developed by Lund Associations led by Hägerstrand aresomewhat different from evolution processes on Darwinism in that the objects ofdiffusion are beyond changing their contents and diffusion process is not free fromdistorting in time dimension. However, the practices of Saemaul Undong in developingcountries as well as in Korea show the evolving process by applying or mixing varietiesof success stories in various fields in Korea from 1970s. In this line, this paper tries toexplain those practices of Saemaul Undong not only from diffusion processes, but alsofrom the evolution point of view. In brief, those interactions between time and space inthe practices of Saemaul Undong show evolving process by adapting human activities toeach environments on Darwinism.

이 논문은 한국과 지구촌 다른 개발도상국에서 시행되고 있는 새마을운동을 사례로 시간과 공간의 상호작용을 검토하기 위한 것이다. 이러한 연구목적을 위해 우선 이 논문은 시간과 공간의 상호작용 ‘틀’을 검토하고 이러한 ‘틀’에 근거하여 새마을운동 사례를 설명한다. 이 논문에서 새마을운동 사례를 설명하기 위한 ‘틀’은 이미 학계에서 논의되어 오고 있는 시간지리학과 확산이론에 근거하고 있다. 그러나 Hägerstrand를 중심으로 한 룬트 학파(Lund Associations)에 의해 정립된 확산이론은 확산 대상인 내용의 변화를 다루지 않아 확산과정에서 시간 차원이 달리 해석될 수 있음을 간과하고 있다. 한국과 다른 개발도상국가에서의 새마을운동 사례는 1970년대부터 한국의 다양한 분야에서의 성공사례를 혼합, 적용하면서 진화하고 있음을 보여준다. 이러한 맥락에서 이 논문은 새마을운동 사례에서 시간과 공간의 상호작용을 확산의 관점에서가 아니라 진화의 관점에서 설명한다. 결론적으로 새마을운동 사례에서의 시간과 공간의 상호작용은 인간활동이 각 환경에 적응하면서 진화하는 과정을 보여준다.
