The sewol ferry disaster has been not finished yet. The cause and the truth of the tragedy have been not probed into at all. The media has been fallen into a swamp of the sewol ferry disaster in this mood. The media has suffered from requests for press arbitration that Korean Evangelical Baptist Church, commonly known as Guwonpa, has made. In this study, I excluded the issue over the fall of the media’s reliability. In other words, the media disregarded reporting the country’s structural problems; it showed media reporting behavior of throwing the entire blame on Yoo Byung-eun, and reported government-managed news as well as a sensationalism only focusing on pitiable stories about the families of the missing and the dead. For the reasons, I aimed at delving into the scope and the limitation of press arbitration that has been indiscriminately requested. Ultimately, it is necessary that the press organizations should convey news and reports thorough verification and confirmation of the fact.

본 연구는 2014년 4월 16일 발생한 세월호 참사 보도 가운데 특정종교집단인 구원파와 관련된 언론중재신청과 이에 대한 해당 언론사의 피해구제 대응에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 이를 위해 구원파가 중재를 청구한 1만 8천여건의 기사를 연구, 분석했다. 또 언론사들의 온라인 기사 처리 실태와 전담 인력도 살펴봤다. 구원파의 무더기 언론중재신청은 언론중재위원회 출범 이후 최다를 기록한 데다 다른 업무를 마비시키는 현상을 빚었다. 연구 결과, 언론사들은 일반적인 반론, 정정뿐만 아니라 언론중재법에 규정돼 있지 않은 잊힐 권리의 수단인 기사삭제까지 사용한 것으로 나타났다. 더욱이 개별 기사의 반론, 정정이 아닌 일괄 반론 및 정정보도문 게재라는 초유의 사태도 낳았다. 세월호 참사 과정에서 보도된 구원파와 관련된 기사는 확인·검증이라는 취재 성실의 의무를 저버린 채 어뷰징과 같은 비정상적인 보도의 결과로 귀결되고 있다. 연구를 통해 유사한 잘못을 되풀이하지 않기 위한 취재와 보도 관행에 대한 개선의 필요성을 제시했다.
