This paper aims to make a philosophical examination, in the context of the universal theory of human nature, of Han Wonjin(韓元震: 1682-1751)’s Theory of three-tiered nature(性三層說) and to interpret its meaning from the contemporary perspective. Most of existing studies deal with Han Won-jin’s doctrine of three-tiered nature based on the typical theory of human nature classified into Korean traditional philosophy or Confucianism. In general Confucianism is considered ethics rather than philosophy, and studies on Han Won-jin’s theory of human nature also discuss it in the historical context of Confucianism or traditional philosophy. Those studies only regard the theory as a bygone theory of human nature. In contrast to such conventional approaches, this study introduces Han Won-jin’s doctrine of three-tiered nature before it examines theories of human nature on the basis of it. Which reveals that the nature of Chohyonggi(超形氣) and the nature of Ingijil(因氣質) defines existence and essence and at the same time it becomes the origin of morality and the nature of Jabgijil(雜氣質) become the objects of moral practice. This study explains Han Won-jin’s philosophy is condensed into his doctrine of three-tiered nature and hopes the explanation will be a new window through which human beings questioning themselves about their own nature look at themselves.

이 연구는 보편적인 인성론의 맥락에서 한원진(韓元震; 1682-1751)의 성삼층설(性三層說)을 철학적으로 고찰하고 그것의 현대적 의미를 조명하는 것을 목표로 한다. 기존의 연구는 한국의 전통철학 내지는 유학으로서 분류되는 학술분류의 영역에서 한원진의 성삼층설을 테마로 삼는다. 그러나 유학은 일반적으로 현대적인 의미에서의 철학이라기보다는 전통철학의 범주에 속하는 것으로서 간주되기 때문에 한원진의 성삼층설 또한 이러한 맥락에서 철학사적으로 연구되고 있는 것이 대부분이다. 이러한 연구는 역사적이고 전통적인 맥락에서 그것을 이해할 수 있게 하지만, 이로써 이것을 현대적인 철학의 범주 안에서 이해하는 것을 방해한다. 이 연구는 이러한 일반적인 방식에서 벗어나 먼저 한원진의 성삼층설을 소개하고, 이를 기반으로 인성론을 철학적으로 고찰한다. 이것은 먼저 사람과 사물이 모두 같은 초형기(超形氣)의 성과 사람과 사물이 다른 인기질(因氣質)의 성이 존재 및 본질규정이면서 동시에 도덕의 원천이 된다는 것을 밝힌다. 그리고 나아가 사람과 사람이 다른 잡기질(雜氣質)의 성이 도덕실천의 대상이 된다는 것을 보여준다. 이로써 이 연구는 한원진의 철학이 성삼층설에 포괄적으로 집약되어 있다는 것을 체계적으로 밝히고 있으며, 또한 이것이 지금 여기에서 자기 본성을 묻는 인간에게 자기 자신을 돌아볼 수 있는 새로운 창이 되기를 희망한다.
