This paper investigates the impact of innovation on service firms in Korea by looking at the survival rate of firms. The structure of research analysis emphasizes the diverse characteristics of service industry. The service firms are categorized into six groups for and each group is tested with three different types of innovation, namely: service product innovation, service process innovation, and non-technological innovation. Research propositions related to innovation premium on survival (either positive or negative) are tested with Cox time-dependent regression analysis. The result shows that the risk of new service product innovation can be different among different industrial groups of service firms. As for high-tech service sectors such as research and development service firms, the service product innovation caused minus innovation premium regards to survival. Contrary to the expectation, the non-technological innovation resulted in non-significant impact and even made fatalities in financial service firms. The additional analysis on the sales per capita reveals that innovation minus-premium on survival can coincides with other positive firm performances. This confusing impacts of non-technological innovation remains to be investigated further in future research.

본 연구는 서비스 기업의 혁신이 생존에 미치는 영향에 대해 탐구한다. 특히 서비스산업이 다양한 세부 서비스그룹으로 나누어 지는 점을 고려하여 여섯 개 세부 서비스산업에 대해 각각 기술혁신과 비기술혁신이 생존에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 기술혁신인 서비스제품혁신과 서비스공정혁신, 비기술혁신인 마케팅․조직 혁신이 혁신프리미엄을 형성하는지 여부를 시간종속콕스위험모형을 통해 분석하였다. 연구결과 서비스제품혁신의 부(-)의 프리미엄인 혁신디스카운트가 제조업 뿐만 아니라 하이테크 서비스산업인 연구개발서비스‧엔지니어링 서비스산업에서 나타나는 점을 탐지하였다. 예상과 달리 비기술혁신의 혁신프리미엄이 발견되지 않았으며 일부 서비스업에서는 오히려 혁신디스카운트가 감지되었다. 이에 따라 추가로 분석한 혁신과 기업성과의 연관성에서는 비기술혁신의 긍정적인 영향이 감지되어 서비스산업에서 비기술혁신의 영향이 복잡하며 향후 추가 분석이 필요함을 암시하였다.
