In 1869 the great english biologist, Thomas Henry Huxley, set out a project to record by photography the all races of the British Empire. He was interested in anthropology, science of human, in its biological attentions through the grand dispute of the 1860s about the origin and development of the human race. At that time there were keen interests to enhance the content of information in anthropology. Anthropologists made a great efforts to systematize their science of human by rationalization of the research methods. In this context the controlled race photography by anthropologists were greatly produced, analyzed. The photographic project of race formed the very important subject in anthropological discourse at that time. Huxley’s photographic project should be considered as part of the grand agenda of anthropological systematization of research method. Huxley send off to Colonial Governors the letters on the photographic shooting method of race. According to the letters mailed to colony, the native of colony should be posed before camera in the nude, full face and profile. The native must be also placed at a same distance from the camera. A measuring device should be placed in a precise position by the side of native. But Huxley’s photographic project turned out to be a failure. First of all, there were many technical problems in Huxley’s instructions. For example, these had not a sufficient explanation on the method of precise measuring of height, head, etc. Beside, many Colonial Governors told that they could not obey Huxley’s request because the natives in the colony opposed a resistance to be photographed in the nude. Although Huxley’s photographic project failed, its influence on ulterior scientific photography were great. Criminal photography of Alphonse Bertillon was directly influenced by this Huxley race photography. First of all, there were many technical problems in Huxley’s instructions. 1869년 영국의 저명한 과학자인 토마스 헉슬리는 대영제국이 거느리는 식민지에 거주하는 모든 인종을 사진으로 기록하는 거대한 프로젝트를 기획했다. 생물학자였던 그는 소위 ‘인간을 연구하는 학문’인 인류학에 점차 관심을 가지게 되었는데, 그 관심은 1860년대 당시 생물학에서 인간 종의 기원과 발달에 대한 첨예한 논쟁에 직접 참여하면서 시작되었다. 19세기 중후반 영국의 인류학계에서는 당시 신생 학문이었던 인류학의 발전을 위해서는 무엇보다도 정보의 질을 향상시키자는 의견이 지배적이었다. 인류학자들은 인류학적 연구방법을 합리화함으로써 인류학 자체를 엄밀한 학문으로 만들고자 했다. 이 같은 맥락에서 인류학자들은 인종사진을 철저하게 통제하고 규격화해서 촬영했으며, 제작된 사진들을 엄밀하게 비교하고 분석하고자 했다. 인종 사진 프로젝트는 당시 인류학 담론에서 매우 중요한 주제가 되었다. 헉슬리의 사진 프로젝트는 당시 인류학자들이 연구방법을 체계화하려 했던 다양한 기획 중의 하나에 해당한다. 헉슬리는 전 세계에 퍼져 있는 영국 식민지 관리들에게 원주민을 체계적으로 촬영하는 방법을 적은 스크립트를 편지로 보냈다. 원주민은 카메라 앞에 누드 상태로 촬영되어야 하며, 동시에 완벽히 정면과 측면 자세로만 촬영되어야 한다. 원주민이 사진에 동일한 비율로 재현되기 위해서는 카메라와의 거리가 일정해야 한다. 원주민의 옆에는 신체의 크기를 측정하기 위한 눈금자가 반드시 설치되어야 한다. 하지만 헉슬리의 사진프로젝트는 실패로 귀결되었다. 이 촬영 스크립트에는 많은 기술적 문제들이 있었기 때문이다. 예컨대 인류학자에게 매우 중요한 신체 정보인 키나 머리 크기를 정확히 촬영하는 방법에 대한 세세한 설명이 부재했다. 게다가 식민지 관리들은 현지에서 헉슬리의 촬영 지침 요구를 따를 수 없다는 내용의 편지를 영국 본국에 보내왔다. 원주민이 누드 상태로 카메라 앞에 서는 것에 대해 강력히 저항했기 때문이다. 헉슬리의 사진 프로젝트는 실패로 끝났지만 사진의 역사에서 이후에 등장하는 여러 사진 프로젝트에 미친 영향은 매우 지대하다. 알퐁스 베르티옹이 고안한 범죄사진 아카이브는 헉슬리인종 사진에 직접적인 영향을 받아 제작되었다.
