Identifying listening as the first step in the enhancement of empathy ability among second graders, this study set out to explore the possibilities of developing a drama program for listening education, examine its relations with empathy ability, and analyze the results based on qualitative data. The perspective of transactional communication allows individuals to create a fictional world of a drama based on the communication context where listening takes place, listen to others in their new roles based on it, be in the positions of others, and thus learn the cognitive and affective elements of listening. Based on that theoretical background, the investigator specified the four stages of listening, which are taking interest, listening, understanding, and reacting, in a five-session drama program. The investigator analyzed such qualitative data as the teacher's lesson journal, students' essays, and interviews to figure out relations between the drama program for listening education and the empathy ability of lower graders in elementary school. The analysis criteria included the cognitive and affective elements of listening. The findings led to the following conclusions: First, the drama program for listening education highlighted the aspects of the students growing out of their old self-centered tendency and respecting others' opinions. Secondly, the drama program for listening education also caused changes to the empathy ability of lower graders in elementary school, who were understanding and considerate of others, thought in the shoes of others, and felt others' emotions like their own. Thirdly, the study is significant in that it identified listening as the first stage toward empathy ability and established the possibilities of developing a drama program for listening education. Finally, dramas make a useful learning tool for the students to form meanings on their own in contexts. The study is expected to serve as a case of providing listening education in contexts and exploring the possibilities of increasing empathy ability through listening.

본 연구는 초등학교 2학년생의 공감 능력 향상을 위하여 경청을 그 첫 단계로 보고 경청 교육을 위한 드라마 프로그램의 개발 가능성을 연구하여, 그것이 공감 능력과 어떠한 관계가 있는지 질적 데이터를 중심으로 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 상호교섭적 의사소통의 관점에서 경청을 바라보았을 때, 경청이 이루어지는 의사소통 맥락을 드라마의 허구 세계로서 창조하고 그 바탕 위에서 역할을 입은 채로 다른 사람의 말에 경청하고 그의 입장이 되어 보는 드라마 경험을 통하여 경청의 인지적 요소와 정의적 요소를 학습할 수 있다. 이러한 이론적 배경에 의해 경청의 네 단계인 관심 갖기, 귀 기울이기, 이해하기, 반응하기를 5회기의 드라마 프로그램으로 구체화시켰다. 이렇게 구성한 경청 교육을 위한 드라마 프로그램이 초등 저학년생의 공감 능력과 어떠한 관계가 있는 지 알아보기 위하여 교사의 수업 일지, 학생 소감문 및 인터뷰 자료 등의 질적 데이터를 바탕으로 실행 결과를 분석하였고, 분석의 기준은 경청의 인지적 요소와 정의적 요소로 삼았다. 연구를 통해 다음과 같은 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. 첫째, 경청 교육을 위한 드라마 프로그램을 통하여 학생들이 자기중심적인 경향에서 벗어나 다른 사람 의 의견을 존중하는 모습이 부각되었다. 둘째, 경청 교육을 위한 드라마 프로그램을 통하여 초등학교 저학년 학생들의 공감 능력에 변화가 관찰 되었다. 이는 다른 사람의 마음을 이해하고 배려하며 자신의 입장과 바꾸어서 생각하거나, 그의 감정을 마치 자신의 것처럼 느끼는 모습 등의 양상으로 나타났다. 셋째, 본 연구는 공감에 이르기 위한 첫 단계로서 경청을 바라보았고, 경청을 교육하기 위한 드라마 프 로그램의 개발 가능성을 마련하였다는 데 의의가 있다. 넷째, 드라마는 맥락 속에서 학생 스스로 의미를 형성하도록 하는 유용한 학습 도구이다. 본 연구가 맥락 속에서 경청을 교육하고, 경청을 통해 공감 능력의 향상 가능성을 찾는 사례로 기여하기를 기대한다.
