This study aimed at examining the characteristics of learning contents included in the instrumental music units of eight elementary music textbooks for third- and fourth-graders and providing suggestions. To this end, the study inspected teaching instrumental music in elementary school, the textbook publishing system, and the contents of the instrumental music units in the 2009 revised national curriculum. Furthermore, it divided and examined the eight elementary music textbooks for third- and fourth graders in the following categories: instrumental music related units and the present condition of instrumental music activity forms; classification according to the use of the musical instruments included in the textbooks; and teaching contents of instrument미 music. The results of the study are as follows. First, instrumental music units constituted a major part in elementary music textbooks for thirdand fourth graders. Furthermore, a look into instrumental music activities in relevant units found that compared with musical instrument-centered instrumental music-based activity (20.5 %), inclusive activity in related units (79.5 %) accounted for a much higher ratio. Second, as for the use of the musical instruments included in each music textbook, object musical instruments among musical instruments for student performance were used as creativity tools for sound exploration. While relatively various new rhythmic instruments were accepted and included in the textbooks, new melodic instruments were not aggressively introduced. In addition, compared with musical instruments for student performance, far more various kinds of musical instruments for appreciation and reference were introduced in the textbooks. Third, the classification and examination of learning contents in the instrumental music units of each music textbook found that rhythmic instruments related learning put more emphasis on inclusive activities while melodic instruments related learning attached more importance to instrumental music-based activity.

본 연구의 목적은 초등학교 3-4학년 8종 음악교과서들의 기악영역 학습 내용 분석을 통해 그 특징과 시사점을 찾고자 한다. 이를 위해 초등학교에서의 기악지도, 교과서 발행 제도 및 2009개 정 교육과정에서의 기악영역 내용을 고찰하고, 초등음악 3-4학년 8종 교과서를 대상으로 기악관 련 단원 및 활동형태 현황, 수록된 악기들의 활용에 따른 분류, 기악 학습지도 내용으로 구분하 여 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 초등 3-4학년 음악교과서에서의 기악영역 단원이 차지하는 비율은 50.2%로써, 비중 있게 다루어지고 있었으며, 관련 단원에서의 활동형태를 살펴본 바, 8종 교과서 모두 기악중심활동(20,5%)보다 관련영역과의 통합 활동(79.5%)의 비율이 높았다. 둘 째, 각 교과서에 수록된 악기들의 활용에서 학생 연주용 악기 중 물체악기는 소리탐색의 창작도 구로서 활용되며, 리듬악기는 새로운 악기들이 비교적 다양하게 채택되어진 반면, 가락악기는 새로운 악기도입이나 활용에 대한 시도가 적극적으로 이루어지지 않고 있다. 감상 및 참고용 악 기는 학생연주용 악기에 비해 훨씬 다양한 종류의 악기가 활용됨을 볼 수 있었다. 그것은 현실적 으로 모든 악기를 직접 연주한다는 것이 어려우므로 감상수업 혹은 특정 주제 수업에서 해당악 기들이 가진 특성이나 표현력, 쓰임 등을 안내할 목적으로 활용됨을 볼 수 있었다. 셋째, 각 교과 서들에 제시된 기악 영역 학습내용을 살펴본바, 리듬악기는 기악중심활동보다는 관련 영역과의 통합활동에 더 비중을 두고 있었고, 이에 비해 가락악기는 통합 활동 보다는 기악중심활동에서 비중 있게 다뤄지고 있음을 볼 수 있었다.
